The Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava has revitalized not only the art of bridge building. All of his structures go beyond more function to become sculptural elements contributing to the quality of built environment. The present work, which follows Calatrava Bridges is a definitive study authorized by the architect. By examining the nature of each project site and the often complex political realities attendant to building, it demonstrates how the architectural work of Santiago Calatrava has reestablished the importance of urban infrastructure to urban design. Calatrava secured his reputation with Zurich's Stadelhofen Station (1982-1990). It is a reputation which has continued to grow with other innovative projects such as the BCE Galleria in Toronto (1987-1992); Lyon Airport Station (1989-1994); a project for a bio-shelter and the completion of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (1991), New York; Tenerife Concert Hall, under construction; and the current extension of the Milwaukee Art Museum. But it was with his competition entry for the conversion of the Reichstag Building in Berlin (Joint 1st Prize, 1992) that gained the attention of the international community at large. The explicitly urban approach to any task is characteristic of Calatrava's work. Né vers la fin du ixe s. avec la construction d’un château sur un éperon dominant le cours de l’Allan et de la Lizaine, Montbéliard s’est développé un contact des influences des mondes bourguignon et germanique et est devenu au xive s. un pôle commercial et religieux. La seconde enceinte du xves est le reflet de sa prospérité : elle a englobé le bourg castral primitif, le bourg de la Halle et celui de Saint-Martin. Les fouilles entreprises en 1993-1994 à l’occasion de la construction d’un centre commercial dans le quartier de Velotte, dans le faubourg Saint-Martin ont permis de retracés, au fil de sept grands états successifs, l’évolution architecturale du bâti et du système de défense urbain. Elles éclairent aussi quelques aspects de la vie quotidienne et sociale des habitants de ce quartier intra muros dont le caractère « campagnard » a perduré jusqu’au dernier quart du xixe s. The history of Montbeliard began in the late 9th century with the construction of a castle on a rocky spur overlooking the Allan and the Lizaine rivers. The city developed as a result of contact with both Burgundian and Germanic culture and by the end of the 14th century had become a commercial and religious centre. The second defensive wall, built in the 15th century is a reflection of the city’s prosperity, encircling as it does the original castle, through as well as the two districts of La Halle and Saint-Martin. Excavation work undertaken in 1993-1994 prior to the construction of a shopping centre in the Velotte quarter of the Saint-Martin district has enabled archeologists to define seven build periods of architectural development covering both buildings and the urban defense system. This work has also shed light on various aspects of daily and social life as experienced by the inhabitants of this area within the city walls the bucolic character of which remained intact up to the final quarter of the 19th century.

De eerste publicatie over het gebouw van de Academia Belgica in Rome, een residentieplaats en onderzoekscentrum voor Belgische kunstenaars en onderzoekers in Rome. Het gebouw werd opgetrokken tussen 1937 en 1939 door een Italiaanse en een Belgische architect, in een zowel modernistische als art-decostijl. Niet enkel de buitenkant is bewaard gebleven, maar ook grote delen van de interieurdecoratie en het meubilair. Dit boek behandelt de verschillende uitvoeringsfases van het originele gebouw en het interieurontwerpprogramma – in de context van de culturele en politieke uitwisseling tussen België en Italië in het interbellum. Het is rijkelijk geïllustreerd met originele foto’s van de architectuur en het interieur van het gebouw, architectuurplannen, tekeningen en ontwerpen. Aan de Belgische fotograaf Maxime Delvaux werd gevraagd om een nieuwe reeks foto’s te maken van het gebouw zoals het vandaag is en die zijn ook in het boek opgenomen.

Roger Bastin, architecte belge né en 1913, sorti de l'ecole de la Cambre en 1936, associé au début de sa carrière avec Jacques Dupuis. Il a ensuite travaillé longtemps avec Guy Van Oost et Pierre Lamby. Cet ouvrage reprend un panorama très complet de ses réalisations. L'ouvrage reprend les réalisations des premières années, les maisons individuelles, les églises, les programmes publics et communautaires et le musée d'art moderne de Bruxelles. Chaque chapitre est ponctué de rencontres avec Jean-Marie André, Françoise Bradfer, Eugène Delatte, Jacques Denis, René Greisch, Victor Hadrien Kockerols, Philippe Robert-Jones, André Willequet et Jacques Wybauw. Ces rencontres interviennent au long de ses pages pour dire la richesse humaine enclose au sein même de la richesse architecturale. Un inventaire accompagne photographies et plans, une bibliographie générale, une liste et bibliographie des oeuvres et un index des noms de lieux en fin d'ouvrage réalisés par Marthe Blanpain donnent des instruments de travail fort utile.
