Abstract

There is no question: We are all persons. But what exactly are persons? Are we immaterial souls or Cartesian Egos which only contingently have bodies? Or are persons nothing over and above their bodies? Are they essentially or most fundamentally animals, evolved beings of a certain sort? Or are we something other or more than animals, namely constituted beings with a certain capacity that distinguishes persons from everything else? What is necessary, and what is sufficient, for an entity to be classified or (re-)identified as a person? What's the value of an analysis of such (biological or psychological) conditions? What does it contribute to our understanding of ourselves as free agents or as beings wanting to live their individual live? The essays collected in this anthology try to answer these questions. They are primarily concerned with the metaphysics of persons and the criteria of personal identity, but also touch on problems of the theory of action and of practical philosophy.

Abstract

Over the past decade, scenography has been a fundamental part of FELT’s design practice. Understood here as exhibition designs, this type of commission has been a space of particular importance to try out and refine design ideas; where architectural scale meets the levity of smaller-scale design. At about one scenography per year, they have informed the breadth of FELT’s work, ranging from furniture design to representative urban architecture. This book features ten scenographies by FELT, evoking their visitor’s experience at the time. Interwoven are reflections on scenography within the development of the office (FELT), dialogues between scenography and architecture (Job Floris and Caroline Voet) and FELT’s work against the broader tradition of exhibition design (Alice Haddad). A conversation with clients and curators (Anne Bambynek, Sofie De Caigny, Katrien Laporte and Jan Van der Stock) provides insight into FELT’s approach and the landscape of exhibition institutions and venues.

Abstract

Automatic Autocorrelation and Spectral Analysis gives random data a language to communicate the information they contain objectively. In the current practice of spectral analysis, subjective decisions have to be made all of which influence the final spectral estimate and mean that different analysts obtain different results from the same stationary stochastic observations. Statistical signal processing can overcome this difficulty, producing a unique solution for any set of observations but that solution is only acceptable if it is close to the best attainable accuracy for most types of stationary data. Automatic Autocorrelation and Spectral Analysis describes a method which fulfils the above near-optimal-solution criterion. It takes advantage of greater computing power and robust algorithms to produce enough candidate models to be sure of providing a suitable candidate for given data. Improved order selection quality guarantees that one of the best (and often the best) will be selected automatically. The data themselves suggest their best representation. Should the analyst wish to intervene, alternatives can be provided. Written for graduate signal processing students and for researchers and engineers using time series analysis for practical applications ranging from breakdown prevention in heavy machinery to measuring lung noise for medical diagnosis, this text offers: • tuition in how power spectral density and the autocorrelation function of stochastic data can be estimated and interpreted in time series models; • extensive support for the MATLAB® ARMAsel toolbox; • applications showing the methods in action; • appropriate mathematics for students to apply the methods with references for those who wish to develop them further.

Abstract

What methodological impact does Contextualism have on the philosophy of language? This collection sets out to provide some answers. The authors in this volume question three ultimately connected assumptions of the philosophy of language. The first assumption relates to the predominant status of referential semantics and its power to explain truth-conditional meaning. This assumption has come under attack by the context thesis and a number of papers pursue the question of whether this is justified. The second assumption gives priority to assertive sentences when considering language use. The context thesis changes our understanding of language use altogether; possible implications from this methodological shift are addressed in this volume. According to the third assumption, philosophical analysis amounts to nothing more than conceptual analysis. The context thesis risks undermining this project. Whether conceptual analysis can still be defended as a methodological tool is discussed in this volume.

Abstract

Meteor Showers and their Parent Comets is a unique handbook for astronomers interested in observing meteor storms and outbursts. Spectacular displays of 'shooting stars' are created when the Earth's orbit crosses a meteoroid stream, as each meteoroid causes a bright light when it enters our atmosphere at high speed. Jenniskens, an active meteor storm chaser, explains how meteoroid streams originate from the decay of meteoroids, comets and asteroids, and how they cause meteor showers on Earth. He includes the findings of recent space missions to comets and asteroids, the risk of meteor impacts on Earth, and how meteor showers may have seeded the Earth with ingredients that made life possible. All known meteor showers are identified, accompanied by fascinating details on the most important showers and their parent comets. The book predicts when exceptional meteor showers will occur over the next fifty years, making it a valuable resource for both amateur and professional astronomers.
