Learning is often progress-oriented, institutionally driven, and focused on the accumulation of knowledge, skills and behaviour. In contrast, unlearning is directed towards embodied forms of knowledge and the (un)-conscious operation of ways of thinking and doing. Unlearning denotes an active critical investigation of normative structures and practices in order to become aware and get rid of taken-for-granted "truths" of theory and practice. This book shares the process of unlearning, taking art and art institutions as sites for unlearning and Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons as an experimental case. Unlearning at an art organization has led to collective unlearning exercises that express the conditions, modalities, and implications of a particular group of art workers. The business of running an art institution is irrevocably tied up with the anxiety and stress of constantly "being busy" making things visible in competitive and hierarchical conditions. This busyness causes the habitual undervaluing of what often remains invisible: so-called reproductive works such as cleaning, fixing, and caring. Unlearning processes make way for social transformations that lead towards the culture of equality and difference which we call the culture of the commons

The publication 'Prix de Rome 2015' presents the work of four talented young artists who have been selected by an international jury for the shortlist of the Prix de Rome Beeldende Kunst 2015. The nominees are Foundland (Lauren Alexander and Ghalia Elsrakbi), Hedwig Houben, Christian Nyampeta and Magali Reus. The jury was impressed by their rich and diverse oeuvres, as well as by their innovative and experimental attitude. Despite the overlap in topics and research, each of the nominees works from a unique position and approach. The Prix de Rome is the oldest and most generous prize in the Netherlands for visual artists and architects under the age of 40. The purpose of the award is to highlight talented artists, encourage them to develop further, and to increase their visibility. The award is organized by the Mondriaan Fund. The winner [Magali Reus] will receive a sum of 40,000 and be given a working period in Rome.

Amateur is the first comprehensive publication about Wendelien van Oldenborgh’s moving image works, and their accompanying installations. Developed over the past ten years of her practice, these works explore communication and interaction between individuals, often against the backdrop of a unique public location, in order to cast attention on repressed, incomplete, and unresolved histories. Through the staging of these encounters on film, van Oldenborgh enables multiple perspectives and voices to coexist, and brings to light political, social, and cultural relationships and how they are manifested through social interactions. The publication is generously illustrated and brings together a wealth of texts by artists, curators, and writers who have been key interlocutors with van Oldenborgh, and who each offer in-depth observations and reflections on a work from her oeuvre. These authors include Nana Adusei-Poku, Ricardo Basbaum, Frédérique Bergholtz, Eric de Bruyn, Binna Choi, David Dibosa, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Avery F. Gordon, Tom Holert, Nataša Ilić, Charl Landvreugd, Sven Lütticken, Anna Manubens, Ruth Noack, and Grant Watson.
