This book draws on the contributions of a range of international experts to consider the current archival landscape and imagine the archive of the future. Firmly rooted in current professional debate and scholarship, Archival Futures offers thought provoking and accessible chapters that aim to challenge and inspire archivists globally and to encourage debate about their futures. It is widely acknowledged that the archive profession/discipline is facing a time of change. The digital world has presented changes in how records are created, used, stored and communicated. At the same time, there is increased public debate over issues such as ownership of and access to information and its authenticity and reliability in a networked and interconnected world. On a practical level archivists are being asked to do more, to have a greater range of skills, often with increasingly restricted resources while competing with others to maintain their role as experts in ever changing environments. Exploring the potential impact of these changes is timely. Such reflections will provide the opportunity to consider the archivists' purpose and role, discuss the practical impact of change on skills and functions and to articulate what can be contributed to a mid 21 century world. Nombre de familles, en France et dans les différents pays ayant participé à la Grande Guerre, conservent des archives de cette période. Cent ans après, ces archives privées éveillent la curiosité émue des générations actuelles et retiennent l’attention des historiens. Les auteurs tentent de répondre aux questions suivantes : Qui conserve aujourd’hui ces archives privées : familles, institutions privées, services publics ? En quoi consistent-elles : correspondances, photographies, journaux intimes ? Qui furent leurs auteurs : militaires ou civils, hommes de troupes ou officiers, présents au front ou à l’arrière, en France ou dans d’autres pays belligérants ? Quels ont été leurs usages successifs depuis la Guerre jusqu’à aujourd’hui : mémoire familiale, témoignages, publications scientifiques, romans ? Les détenteurs d’archives familiales qui s’interrogent sur le sort à réserver aux documents hérités de leurs ancêtres auxquels ils souhaitent rendre hommage y trouveront de nombreuses réponses à leurs questions. Ce livre s’adresse aussi aux étudiants en histoire, aux chercheurs et, plus largement, à tous ceux qui ressentent le besoin d’en savoir plus sur les archives de ce conflit mondial qui a tant marqué notre histoire. Cette publication est issue d’un colloque conjointement organisé par La Société des Amis des Archives de France et les Archives nationales, en partenariat avec la Fondation Singer- Polignac ; il fait partie des événements commémorant le centenaire de la Grande Guerre (1914-1918) et a reçu le label de la « Mission du centenaire », chargée par l’État de coordonner l’ensemble des manifestations sur le territoire national. Les auteurs, français ou étrangers, universitaires ou archivistes, descendants ou non de poilus, sont tous directement impliqués dans l’usage public d’archives privées de la Première Guerre mondiale.

Which is in your opinion the most extraordinary archival item of your archives service and why?" The archivists of the Belgian State Archives were asked this question. There was only one constraint, as the items had to originate from the Ancien Regime: the period from the end of the Middle Ages until the French Revolution. 'Extraordinary' applied either to content or form. Thus, the archivists were given the opportunity to show off the real gems of their archives service. This book allows you to marvel at these outstanding items from the Belgian State Archives repositories
