ll est banal de dire que le XVIIIe siècle a vu se déplacer la vie sociale de la Cour vers la Ville, de Versailles vers Paris. Mais il ne suffit pas d'énumérer des anecdotes prenant pour cadre les salons de Mme du Deffand et de Mme Geoffrin, et de citer les écrivains ou les artistes qui les ont fréquentés. Ce qu'il faut comprendre, c'est la signification historique d'une forme de sociabilité. Ce livre offre, pour la première fois, une véritable histoire sociale et culturelle des salons parisiens du XVIIIe siècle, et permet de réviser de nombreuses idées reçues. Ces salons n'étaient pas, comme on le dit trop souvent, des lieux de discussion critique permettant de diffuser largement les idées des Lumières, mais bien plutôt les centres de la sociabilité mondaine, dévolus aux plaisirs de la table et du mot d'esprit, au théâtre de société comme aux intrigues politiques. C'est dans les salons que se recomposent les identités aristocratiques, que se forment les réputations littéraires et politiques, et que se prépare l'accès à la Cour. Le loisir lettré et les pratiques culturelles des salons deviennent alors un élément essentiel de la distinction aristocratique et de l'imaginaire national, tandis que de nombreux écrivains des Lumières adhèrent aux pratiques et aux idéaux des élites parisiennes et de la noblesse de Cour. Antoine Lilti propose ainsi une histoire de la mondanité au XVIIIe siècle qui permet de comprendre comment s'est noué, durablement, dans la société et la culture françaises, le lien entre les élites du pouvoir et la littérature
