Un spectre hante le monde : celui des communautés closes, exclusives et guerrières. Conflits ethniques et paniques identitaires se multiplient. L'intolérance est de retour. Elle parle la langue " communautariste " sur la base d'un nouveau code culturel: celui de la tolérance obligatoire, voire tyrannique. Comment est-il possible que l'intolérance se nourrisse de la tolérance ? Comment la célébration de la tolérance peut-elle produire, masquer ou légitimer de nouvelles formes d'intolérance ? A partir de ce paradoxe, Pierre-André Taguieff repense l'idée de tolérance comme principe de la démocratie, qui distingue et sépare, garantissant ainsi les libertés individuelles. Il revisite le pluralisme, précieux héritage de la modernité intellectuelle et politique illustré par les principes de séparation des pouvoirs et de laïcité, lequel est aujourd'hui sournoisement menacé. Fondamentalistes de toutes obédiences, islamistes occidentalisés visant l'islamisation des sociétés occidentales, multiculturalistes prêchant en faveur d'une " laïcité plurielle ", tous se réfèrent à une prétendue " nouvelle laïcité " qui masque le dessein d'abolir la laïcité elle-même. Les sociétés ouvertes, qui font prévaloir les libertés individuelles, sont mal armées face à ces ennemis qui, au lieu de s'opposer clairement et frontalement, agissent en stratèges cyniques et les combattent en jouant sur les valeurs qui les fondent. L'hypertolérance détruit la tolérance, de même que l'hyperpluralisme détruit le pluralisme, dont le multiculturalisme, appelé couramment " communautarisme ", est la plus trompeuse et la plus dangereuse des contrefaçons. A rebours de l'idéologie médiatique qui diabolise globalement le libéralisme, La République enlisée se propose de défendre l'individualisme libéral en tant que fondement du pluralisme, tout en montrant qu'il prend sa plus haute signification dans la conception républicaine de la communauté politique, impliquant l'idéal d'une citoyenneté active.
