Renowned throughout Renaissance Europe, Pieter Coecke (1502-1550) produced works for the wealthiest and most important patrons of the time, including Emperor Charles V, Francois I of France, Henry VIII of England, the Hapsburgs, and Cosimo de Medici. While he is best known for his magnificent tapestries, he was also a consummate artist in other media, and the output from his workshop ranged from painted altarpieces to designs and cartoons for stained glass. This lavish publication, the first monograph specifically devoted to this Renaissance genius, introduces Pieter Coecke to a contemporary audience and restores his place among the great artists of the 16th century. New photographs, including fine details, reunite some of the finest surviving drawings and panel paintings with twenty of the splendid Renaissance tapestries made to his designs, while texts by thirty prominent scholars explore Coecke's art and world. Both a feast for the eyes and an important art historical reappraisal of a great Renaissance master, this important study will stand as the comprehensive volume on a major artist of the Northern Renaissance.0Exhibition: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, USA (7.10.2014-11.1.2015).

In 1515, Pope Leo X commissioned the Italian painter Raffaello Sanzio (1483–1520), now generally known as Raphael in English, to make the cartoons for a series of ten tapestries with scenes from the lives of Saints Peter and Paul. This commission played an instrumental part in the stylistic development of the Flemish tapestries, a marvellous illustration of princely splendour in the sixteenth century. Under Habsburg rule, Brussels soon emerged as a leading manufactory for exquisite products. Raphael’s designs are among the most successful series in the history of tapestry production. This publication highlights the tremendous wealth of these tapestries in intricate detail. It accompanies a collection exhibition of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, home to the former imperial tapestry collection.

In the sixteenth century, the Ottoman court in Constantinople emerged as the axial centre of early modern diplomacy in Eurasia. Diplomatic Cultures at the Ottoman Court, c.1500-1630 takes a unique approach to diplomatic relations by focusing on how diplomacy was conducted and diplomatic cultures forged at a single court: the Sublime Porte. It unites studies from the perspectives of European and non-European diplomats with analyses from the perspective of Ottoman officials involved in diplomatic practices. It focuses on a formative period for diplomatic procedure and Ottoman imperial culture by examining the introduction of resident embassies on the one hand, and on the other, changes in Ottoman policy and protocol that resulted from the territorial expansion and cultural transformations of the empire in the sixteenth century. The chapters in this volume approach the practices and processes of diplomacy at the Ottoman court with special attention to ceremonial protocol, diplomatic sociability, gift-giving, cultural exchange, information gathering, and the role of para-diplomatic actors.

This volume is about Netherlandish workshop practice from the late fifteenth century to the 1560s. Some articles present the results of new technical studies that are comprehensive in nature, revealing the inter-relationship between prints and painting practices, modes of collaboration, shifts in procedure, the development and use of shop models, and the impact of international commerce. Others present new documentary evidence and new methods of historical statistics revealing trends in workshop size, career trajectories, and immigration. The essays have been collected around the theme of a session on workshop practice organized by Molly Faries for the 2002 Historians of Netherlandish Art International Conference held in Antwerp.
