Focusing on intracellular components in prokaryotes, this volume defines the components and labelled inclusions as discrete bodies resulting from synthesis of a metabolic product. It provides historical background and comprehensive reviews of eight well-known prokaryotic inclusions.

Predatory Prokaryotes focuses on the ecology of predation at the microbial level. It aims to increase the awareness of the great possibilities that predation between microbes offer for studying and discussing basic ecological and general biological concepts. This volume contains chapters on the diversity, ecology and phylogeny of predatory prokaryotes, introducing models of predator–prey interactions between microorganisms and presenting analyses of the impact of predation in microbial systems. Laboratory work with Bdellovibrio-and-like organisms (BALOs), the most studied predatory bacteria, is presented through accounts of the cultivation and the molecular techniques used for studying BALOs. A first comparative analysis of different BALO genomes is also provided. Further chapters discuss the chemotactic, regulatory and sensory circuits of these ubiquitous predatory bacteria. Finally, the unique biochemicals used as building blocks and new proteins found in BALO cell walls are reviewed.

Microbial Diversity offers the first comprehensive, in-depth treatment of microbial diversity for undergraduate and graduate students. Using a global approach, it illustrates the impact of microorganisms on ecological and earth system phenomena. Beginning with a detailed treatment of key concepts and methods, including the nature of microbial species, and the use of microscopic, culture, molecular and phylogenetic systematic methods, it then focuses on environmental evolution, biochemical cycling and species interactions. The text's extensive art program, including its 4-color images of microbes, will be available to instructors on CD-ROM, as well as on the web. The website will also feature an interactive microbe area. Combining molecular, genetic and microbial diversity, this textbook presents recent advances in this growing field and connects diversity with ecology and evolution. Microbial Diversity will be a vital resource, as well as an essential text for classroom use.

Systematic biology has a far wider application than merely the provision of a reliable classification scheme for new strains. With the framework of the hierarchic system stabilizing, genomes, noncoding regions, and genes and their products can now be evaluated in an evolutionary context. This book summarizes recent developments in the molecular characterization of cultured and as-yet uncultured prokaryotes, emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses of individual approaches. The chapters of the book are compiled to stimulate students to enter the field of bacterial diversity, presenting a broad spectrum of fascinating multifaceted disciplines that illuminate the paths to ecosystem functioning, communication within communities, symbiosis, life in extreme environments, astrobiology, and more.
