Abstract

The presentation in the book is based on charge balance on the dust particles, number and energy balance of the constituents and atom-ion-electron interaction in the gaseous plasma. Size distribution of dust particles, statistical mechanics, Quantum effects in electron emission from and accretion on dust particles and nonlinear interaction of complex plasmas with electric and electromagnetic fields have been discussed in the book. The book introduces the reader to basic concepts and typical applications. The book should be of use to researchers, engineers and graduate students.

Abstract

This COSPAR Colloquium Series deals with the main achievements that were accomplished through the collaborative efforts among ISTP participants; the plasma dynamics of magnetic reconnection in a thin plasma sheet, the action of the solar wind on the plasma population in the plasma sheet and around the magnetotail boundary layer, the relationship between the substrom expansion region and the X-line formation in the magnetotail, and the temporal evolution of the dipolarization from from the near-Earth to the distant tail.

Abstract

"This Volume contains the proceedings of ASTRONUM-2009 -- the fourth in a series of international conferences now organized by the Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the Laboratory for Research into the Fundamental Laws of the Universe at the French Commissariat of Atomic Energy. The subjects of the conference included such topics as turbulence and cosmic ray transport, astrophysical flows, space plasma flows, kinetic and hybrid simulations, numerical methods, algorithms, and frameworks, and data handling and visualization. All of these topics are of great importance for scientists investigating solar structure, the heliosphere, the Sun-Earth connection, and various astrophysical phenomena. The problems discussed at the conference are characterized by different time and space scales, regions, or particle populations, for which different sets of defning equations or concepts are necessary to understand the physical system in its entirety. This book will be of interest to specialists in applied mathematics, astrophysics, space physics, and computer science working on the application of novel numerical algorithms to contemporary problems arising in these fields. It can also be used by graduate students to get acquainted with the fundamental approaches to solving the fluid dynamic and kinetic equations governing space plasma flows."--Publisher's website.

Abstract

"The book focus on plasma physics with a specific emphasis on the peculiarities of the "collisionless" properties of those media. Collisionless here means free of ion-collisions. Such an approach does not exist in the present literature although the collisionless condition is ubiquitous in space- and astrophysics as well in some laboratory devices devoted to magnetic fusion, like ITER. Furthermore, it leads to specific problems that are often misunderstood by physicists of other domains. It is not possible to use ordinary thermo-dynamics or any statistical physics based on a small departure from thermal equilibrium. Furthermore, the theory illustrated with concrete applications mainly taken in space psysics (solar corona, solar wind, magnetospheres, and auroral phenomena) and in astrophysics (relativistic shocks, cosmic ray acceleration) will be presented. In the book some indications on the numerical simulation of the collisionless plasmas is presented, whereas other classical textbooks were written before the present development of these techniques."
