Despite the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenge of realizing sustainability across the triple bottom line of social, environmental, and economic development remains an urgent priority. If anything, it is now imperative that we work towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the global challenges are significant. Many of the societal challenges represent complex problems that require multifaceted solutions drawing on multidisciplinary approaches.Engineering management involves the management of people and projects related to technological or engineering systems—this includes project management, engineering economy and technology management, as well as the management and leadership of teams. Systems engineering involves the design, integration and management of complex systems over the full life cycle—this includes requirements capture and integrated system design, as well as modelling and simulation. In addition to the theoretical underpinnings of both disciplines, they also provide a range of tools and techniques that can be used to address technological and organisational complexity. The disciplines of engineering management and systems engineering are therefore ideally suited to help tackle both the challenges and the opportunities associated with realising a sustainable future for all.This book provides new insights on how engineering management and systems engineering can be utilised as part of the journey towards sustainability. The book includes a discussion of a broad range of different approaches to investigate sustainability through utilising quantitative, qualitative and conceptual methodologies. This book focuses on the much-needed efforts to design sustainable, well-being-oriented economies, based on appropriate energy use in all sectors of a country´s development. Carbon neutrality, energy efficiency and effectiveness, renewable energies, circular economy strategies, environmental consequences of energy use, engagement and empowerment of local communities in decision making, energy and environmental impacts of consumer behavior, and finally science-based approaches towards sustainable production and consumption are the main focus of the research activities described within this book. An effort to go beyond energy scarcity, to promote energy communities, to explore new technologies, and overall, to understand and address the population-lifestyle-energy nexus towards increased and shared well-being is the final result jointly provided by the book authors. All in all, the aim is for the book to be the starting point of a deeper research and understanding of the importance of a radical improvement in energy use in society, beyond considering energy as just a resource in the world market. Buildings account for more than one-third of the global final energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The building sector offers a significant potential in the transition towards the decarbonisation of societies. Om aan de Europese klimaatambities tegemoet te komen, heeft België nog maar 28 jaar om volledig klimaatneutraal te worden. Concreet betekent dat zo'n 115 miljoen ton minder CO2-uitstoot. De klok tikt, maar in De klimaatschok tonen Geert Noels en zijn team van Econopolis dat het kan. Samen met een panel van klimaatexperts berekenden zij de impact van twintig realistische klimaatoplossingen: van technologische precisielandbouw over nieuwe vormen van kernenergie tot het hergebruik van industriële restwarmte via warmtenetten. Vooruitgang is niet het probleem, maar net de oplossing. De vindingrijkheid en wilskracht van de mens kan veel problemen oplossen.Dankzij die twintig oplossingen kunnen we tegen 2030 jaarlijks 67 miljoen ton CO2-uitstoot vermijden. Tegen 2050 moet het lukken om onze broeikasgasuitstoot naar nul te brengen. Daar is wel moed en creativiteit voor nodig - van de overheid, de bedrijfswereld en de burgers. Dit boek biedt inspiratie en concrete handvatten, om tot klimaatoplossingen te komen en voor iedereen een betere omgeving te creëren.Nemen we geen actie, dan zetten we klimaatfenomenen in gang die we niet meer kunnen terugdraaien. De schadelijke effecten zouden niet enkel onze natuur overhoopgooien, maar ook een grote menselijke en economische weerslag hebben. Ons land moet zich aanpassen om op wereldschaal de klimaatimpact te verkleinen, maar ook om onszelf te beschermen tegen hitte, droogte, stormen en overstromingen. Achter elke uitdaging schuilt een opportuniteit.
