Abstract

Kāñcipuram, in Tamil Nadu, is one of the principal permanent seats of Hinduism where Vaiṣṇavism and Śaivism have co-existed since a very long time. The Kāñcipurāṇam, a text in Tamil dating back to the second half of the 18th century, narrates the various legends connected to the site. It is attributed to the poet Civañan̠acuvāmi and was inspired from a Sanskrit Kāñcimāhātmya said to belong to the Skandapurāṇa. Though pan-Indian in its religious traditions, it is deeply rooted in and adapted to Kāñci and has ensured the transmission and popularity of the Śaiva tradition of Kāñci to the present day. It is summarized here in French and illustrated with photographs taken in the temples of Kāñcipuram and other sites of Tamil Nadu.

Abstract

From the eighth century onwards, Christians living under Islam have produced numerous apologetic and polemical works, aimed at proving the continuing validity of Christianity. Among these is the Legend of Sergius Baḥīrā, which survives in two Syriac and two Arabic versions, and appears here in edition and translation. Being a counterhistory of Islam, it reshapes early Muslim traditions about a monk recognizing Muḥammad as the final Prophet by turning this monk into Muhammad’s tutor and co-author of the Qur’an. In response to Muslim triumphalist propaganda, it portrays Islam’s political power as predestined but finite and unrelated to its religious message. This feature sets the legend apart from similar Christian accounts of the origin of Islam, East and West, which are reviewed in this study as well.

Abstract

"Goethe is the most famous German author, and the poetic drama Faust, Part I (1808) is his best-known work, one that stands in the company of other leading canonical works of European literature such as Dante's Inferno and Shakespeare's Hamlet. This is the first new translation into English since David Constantine's 2005 version. Why another translation when there are several currently in print? To invoke Goethe's own authority when speaking of his favorite author, Shakespeare, Goethe asserts that so much has already been said about the poet-dramatist "that it would seem there's nothing left to say," but adds, "yet it is the peculiar attribute of the spirit that it constantly motivates the spirit." Goethe's great dramatic poem continues to speak to us in new ways as we and our world continually change, and thus a new or updated translation is always necessary to bring to light Faust's almost inexhaustible, mysterious, and enchanting poetic and cultural power. Eugene Stelzig's new translation renders the text of the play in clear and crisp English for a contemporary undergraduate audience while at the same time maintaining its leading poetic features, including the use of rhyme."--

Abstract

"Friedrich Hölderlin’s only novel, Hyperion (1797–99), is a fictional epistolary autobiography that juxtaposes narration with critical reflection. Returning to Greece after German exile, following his part in the abortive uprising against the occupying Turks (1770), and his failure as both a lover and a revolutionary, Hyperion assumes a hermitic existence, during which he writes his letters. Confronting and commenting on his own past, with all its joy and grief, the narrator undergoes a transformation that culminates in the realisation of his true vocation.Though Hölderlin is now established as a great lyric poet, recognition of his novel as a supreme achievement of European Romanticism has been belated in the Anglophone world. Incorporating the aesthetic evangelism that is a characteristic feature of the age, Hyperion preaches a message of redemption through beauty. The resolution of the contradictions and antinomies raised in the novel is found in the act of articulation itself. To a degree remarkable in a prose work of any length, what it means is inseparable from how it means. In this skilful translation, Gaskill conveys the beautiful music and rhythms of Hölderlin’s language to an English-speaking reader."
