De Weense architect en ?allround designer? Josef Hoffmann (1870?1956) is zoveel meer dan de oprichter van de Wiener Werkstätte. Dit boek biedt een brede blik op zijn oeuvre dat zich ontwikkelde over maar liefst zestig jaar. Speciale aandacht gaat naar zijn creatieve werkwijze en zijn miskend kleurgebruik.Deze monografie verschijnt naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling Josef Hoffmann ? In de ban van schoonheid, die van 6 oktober 2023 tot 14 april 2024 plaatsvindt in het Brusselse Museum Kunst & Geschiedenis. Het project kwam tot stand in samenwerking met het Museum für angewandte Kunst (MAK) in Wenen en is een van de blikvangers in het Art Nouveau Jaar 2023 in Brussel.

The book explores the historical connections between the notions of architectural interior, subjective space, human interiority, and represented space including virtual space. In the 18th century the notion of "interiority" understood as a paradigm of human subjectivity came to be articulated in a sustained way in architectural and visual, rather than only literary forms. While the notion of the interior and the processes of "interiorization" were, as Walter Benjamin demonstrated, the defining features of 19th-century bourgeois culture, it is the different forms of conceptual assault on, or deconstruction of interiority that define the approach to space and self in the 20th and 21st centuries. The book examines models of understanding "interiority" as these were developed in relation to notions of space and spatial experience. Cars, single-family houses, fallout shelters, air-conditioned malls-these are only some of the many interiors making up the landscape of American suburbia. Indoor America explores the history of suburbanization through the emergence of such spaces in the postwar years, examining their design, use, and representation. By drawing on a wealth of examples ranging from the built environment to popular culture and film, Andrea Vesentini shows how suburban interiors were devised as a continuous cultural landscape of interconnected and self-sufficient escape capsules. The relocation of most everyday practices into indoor spaces has often been overlooked by suburban historiography; Indoor America uncovers this latent history and contrasts it with the dominant reading of suburbanization as pursuit of open space. Americans did not just flee the city by getting out of it-they did so also by getting inside. Vesentini chronicles this inner-directed flight by describing three separate stages. The encapsulation of the automobile fostered the nuclear segregation of the family from the social fabric and served as a blueprint for all other interiors. Introverted design increasingly turned the focus of the house inward. Finally, through interiorization, the exterior was incorporated into the all-encompassing interior landscape of enclosed malls and projects for indoor cities. In a journey that features tailfin cars and World's Fair model homes, Richard Neutra's glass walls and sitcom picture windows, Victor Gruen's Southdale Center and the Minnesota Experimental City, Indoor America takes the reader into the heart and viscera of America's urban sprawl.

Our homes are an expression of how we want to live; they shape our everyday routines and fundamentally affect our well-being. Interior design for the home sustains a giant global industry and feeds an entire branch of the media. However, the question of dwelling, or how to live, is found increasingly to be lacking in serious discourse. This book sets out to review the interior design of our homes. It discusses 20 iconic residential interiors from the present back to the 1920s, by architects and designers such as Assemble, Arno Brandlhuber, Lina Bo Bardi, and Josef Frank and by artists such as Cecil Beaton and Andy Warhol.
