Includes 'A Calendar of the Pipe Rolls of the Reign of Richard I for Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire 1189-1199', by G. Herbert Fowler and Michael W. Hughes. The calendar in English is preceded by an introduction which explains what the roll contains and how it has been calendared and analyses some of the information in the pipe rolls. It is followed by copious notes and a fold-out map containing a reconstruction of the hundreds of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire at the time of Richard I. The authors are careful to indicate that the hundred boundaries are approximations based on later parish boundaries and that the locations shown for vills are similarly only probable.

"Through the prism of gender, this volume explores the contrasting cultures and material and social practices of mathematics and science in the decades surrounding 1900. It is demonstrated that gender, far from being a peripheral issue, is central to understanding the development of both pure and practical disciplines at this time"--Provided by publisher.

One Hundred Pages for the Future: Reflections of the President of the Club of Rome aims to show the nature and depth of human crisis and the dangers that threaten the survival of man as a species if the downward global trends are not stopped and reversed. The book first underscores the end of self-regulating mechanisms, age of great revolutions, and growth of population. The text then elaborates on the syndromes of decline, including devastation of nature, increasing threats on security, economic problems, and the ambiguity and ambivalence of science. The manuscript takes a look at the paths to change, giving importance to the contributions of The Club of Rome in defining the problems that imperil human future. The text also highlights the need to adopt policies and strategies that can effectively respond to the global interests of humankind, as well as assuring the governability of the human system. The book is a vital reference for readers interested in studying human crisis and the dangers posed to mankind in the midst of increasingly destructive global trends.

The 1,036 essays in this six-volume set cover the world's most important events and developments in the forty years that included World War I and led up to World War II, from 1901 through 1940. The period witnessed not only the Great War but also the Great Depression, the rise of the Nazi regime, the expansion of voting rights to women, and the flowering of African American literature and arts in the Harlem Renaissance. While the emphasis of the set is on political and military events, the range of subject matter is impressively diverse. Much emphasis is given to important events in the arts, sciences, business and human rights. The events are arranged chronologically. The text of each essay is divided into these sections: "Summary of Event", a chronological description of the facts of the event; "Significance", assessing the event's historical impact; "Further Reading", an annotated list of sources for further study; and "See also", cross-references to other essays within this Great Events set. Every essay includes an annotated, up-to-date bibliography and is illustrated and supplemented with sidebars that quote from key primary source documents
