Honderd jaar na zijn geboorte eert Museum Prinsenhof Delft de internationaal gerenommeerde Delftse kunstenaar Bram Bogart (1921-2012) met een overzichtstentoonstelling en een boek. Bogart is als abstract expressionistisch materieschilder, de grondlegger van de Nederlandse informele schilderkunst en inspiratiebron voor Delftse kunstenaars als Jan Schoonhoven en Jan Henderikse.0Bogarts eigenzinnige oeuvre is in de publicatie kleurrijk verbeeld en verwoord. Van zijn vroege figuratieve stillevens en landschappen tot zijn late abstracte werk waarin hij op steeds groter formaat gaat werken en de verf zwaarder, dikker en bonter van kleur wordt. Een persoonlijk interview met zoon Bram van den Boogaart jr. en foto?s uit het privéarchief van de familie, geven een uniek en intiem kijkje in de wereld van deze schilder van formaat.

Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) n'a jamais craint d'expérimenter, créant de ce fait des œuvres d'une beauté, d'une force et d'une intensité émotionnelle inégalées. »Dies ist die Geschichte von den genialen CIA-Boys, die die einzigen wirklichen Kunstwissenschaftler des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts waren«. So könnte Heiner Mühlmanns provozierender Essay beginnen, der uns »das wahre Gesicht« der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts zeigt. Die Kurzform der Geschichte um die CIA-Boys geht ungefähr so: Als Antwort auf das »Haus der deutschen Kunst«, dem gigantischen Monument einer nationalsozialistischen Propaganda, führte der amerikanische Staat mit Hilfe des MoMA einen raffinierten Gegenschlag. Taktisches Ziel: die Sabotage der nationalsozialistischen Mobilisierungskunst mittels Konstruktion einer modernen Weltkunst. So schleusten die CIA-Kunstwissenschaftler das Massenprodukt »Abstrakter Expressionismus« in die Kunst ein. Wie gut diese Geheimwaffe funktionierte, zeigt Mühlmann an der Documenta. Expressionist works on paper from the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art are presented in this volume, which documents the wealth of the Museum's holdings in that area. Many of them are published here for the first time, and several are recent additions to the collection. All are illustrated in full-page color reproductions that show the nuances of each work in great detail. The Abstract Expressionists are best known for their paintings and sculptures, and virtually all of the many publications about these artists concentrate on those large-scale works. This unique catalogue deals exclusively with their smaller, more intimate works on paper, providing many new insights about the routes that led to the Abstract Expressionists' innovative artistic accomplishments. The nineteen artists included are William Baziotes, James Brooks, Elaine de Kooning, Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Gerome Kamrowski, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Richard Pousette-Dart, Theodore Roszak, Mark Rothko, Anne Ryan, David Smith, Theodoros Stamos, and Mark Tobey. Each of them is discussed in a separate essay, which encompasses information about the artist's background and development, commentary about the importance of drawing in his or her oeuvre, and an analysis of each work in the selection. Also included in the essays is technical information about a number of the individual works that enhances understanding of the variety and originality of these artists' media and techniques.
