"Fils de Franz Courtens, peintre termontois pleinairiste renommé, Alfred Courtens s'est formé auprès des sculpteurs Charles Van der Stappen et Thomas Vinçotte. C'est par les statues équestres de nos rois, les portraits de nos reines et les bustes de personnalités, empreints de force et de grandeur, qu'il s'est surtout illustré. Ce livre se veut une découverte complète et intimiste de l'artiste en partant de ses dessins et de ses oeuvres de jeunesse. Il est à la fois proche du symbolisme, de Carpeaux par le côté coquin de certains visages et de Rodin par le nonfinito de certaines de ses oeuvres. Son Caprice lui vaudra le prix Godecharle en 1913. Travailleur inlassable, il s'est aussi adonné à l'art délicat de la médaille et du bas-relief. Son inspiration demeura chez lui jusqu'à son dernier jour, fraîche et enthousiaste : maternités pleines de grâce, bustes naturels de femmes et d'enfants côtoient les figures de l'Art déco et les portraits virils.
