Abstract

This report presents the results of the assessment of the organisation of the central government of Sweden. The study looks at reforms that are aimed at improving the quality of services (more value) and efficiency (less money) in central government. Starting with facts and quantitative benchmarks on the Swedish central government, the study reviews recent reforms in Sweden, and makes recommendations in ten selected areas. The study concludes with a survey of the effects on the quality of services and the potential savings.

Abstract

This book examines local migration policy in Sweden in light of the European migrant crisis. The novel approach of this volume covers both local governments policies on admission of immigrants and their efforts for enhancing social integration. The focus is on the division of responsibilities between political levels, examined through theories encompassing both governance structures and output and outcomes of policy. Sweden is a rare example where migration policy has undergone massive changes in the last decade. During the crisis, the country received some of the largest flows of immigrants in relation to its population compared with other European countries. Drawing from statistical material, case studies and a rich body of interviews, this innovative work provides a valuable resource that aspires to investigate the significance of the local level of government in migration policy. The objective is to reach general conclusions that go beyond the realms of the empirical focus.

Abstract

It has been justly claimed that sweden's system of population registration, which dates back to the early eighteenth century, is quite unique internationnally. The collection of data over this 200-year period enables the development of the country's population to be analysed in greater detail than that of perhaps any other country in the world. This is the first time that a selection of sweden's vast accumulation of population data is being made available in english. As the book has been primarily written for historians, specialised demographic terminology has been avoiced as far as possible. The text traces the historical development of fertility, mortality and migration from the middle of the 18th century up to the present day. Some chapters are devoted to the geographical differences in fertility, mortality and migration, while others deal with the composition of the population by sex and age. The appendix contains a "backward" projection of the population to 1700. The two authors of this book are on the staff of the Swedish Central Bureau of Statistics, under whose aegis their research has been carried out.
