Abstract

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the prestigious journal Cells launched a series of Special Issues in 2021. The Special Issue entitled “10th Anniversary of Cells—Advances in Cell Cycle” was launched together with other sister Special Issues under the umbrella “10th Anniversary of Cells.” The cell cycle is a series of events that drives cells to divide and produce two new daughter cells. The typical cell cycle in eukaryotes is composed of the following phases: G1, S, G2, and M phases. Cell cycle progression is mediated by cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) and their regulatory cyclin subunits. CDKs, such as CDK4/6, CDK2, and CDK1 (also known as CDC2), are serine/threonine kinases with a wide variety of substrates. CDKs are activated mainly by binding to their cyclin partners, whose expressions rise and fall throughout the cell cycle to mediate the temporal activation of each CDKs. Various cell cycle checkpoints exist to ensure that critical processes are engaged prior to progression to the next phase. These cell cycle checkpoints are the G1 (restriction) checkpoint, the G2/M DNA damage checkpoint, and the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC).This Special Issue attracted the attention of many scientists in the cell cycle field and consists of 10 high quality papers, including four research articles and six scientific reviews: a great success. The four research articles focus on various important topics of the cell cycle using a broad range of model organisms, including yeast, sea urchins, green algae, and human cancer cell lines.

Abstract

Thermal spray technology has been widely adopted industrially to combat diverse forms of surface degradation caused by wear, corrosion, oxidation, high thermal load, etc. Nonetheless, improvements in coating quality are incessantly sought to further enhance durability and/or performance of components operating in increasingly aggressive environments. This has led to technology advancements on various fronts, spanning feedstock materials, process variants, torch designs, coating architectures, etc. These have also been complemented by developments in closely allied areas to accommodate novel substrate materials, explore post-treatments, investigate coating behaviour under varied harsh conditions and harness benefits of artificial intelligence/neural networking. All of the above, along with efforts to improve diagnostic tools and create reliable control systems, have been driven by the desire to achieve robust shop-floor thermal spray capabilities to consolidate existing applications and spur new ones. This book is a compilation of twelve exciting contributions made for the Special Issue on “Advances in Thermal Spray Technology”, and showcases some of the above developments that are currently attracting interest in the field.

Abstract

The word "cancer" is associated with at least 100 different pathologies, depending on the organ involved and the type of tumor developed. Cancer is a complex disease involving multiple pathogenetic mechanisms. Characterization of different types of cancers, which distinguishes them from healthy cells and other cancers, allows for the identification of specific targets for each individual tumor. The principle of chemotherapy is based on interference with the mechanisms that regulate the life and proliferation of cancer cells, causing their death. In recent years, there has been continuous progress in the development of therapeutic agents against cancer, which is ongoing. The Anticancer Inhibitors Special Issue focuses on new target-based anticancer agents that inhibit a specific target involved in the suppression of various types of cancer and the control of their chemoresistance. There is a collection of research and review articles on advances in drug discovery, design, and development of new inhibitor compounds with potency against various cancer types.

Abstract

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is now one of the most widely used of basic molecular biology techniques and is an indispensable research tool for the molecular biologist. The basic PCR technique provides the cornerstone for in vitro DNA amplification - allowing the researcher to produce large quantities of DNA from minute amounts of starting material.PCR: A Practical Approach Volume 2 is not a revised version of PCR: A Pracical Approach, but sets out to address some of the exciting new applications fo PCR including cDNA cloning, mRNA quantitation and expression of proteins from PCR products, genomic DNA mapping and fingerprinting, and mutational analysis. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) has become one of the most widely used techniques in biomedical research, enabling the fast, inexpensive production of large quantities of DNA from minute amounts of starting material. Although the basic procedure is very simple, many variations of it have been developed for different applications, for use in such diverse areas as forensic and diagnostic medicine, genetic engineering, and the food industry. PCR: A Practical Approach provides a general introduction to PCR for researchers new to the area, followed by chapters detailing specific applications of the technique. It covers gene analysis at the level of restriction enzyme polymorphism, point mutation and sequence analysis. Methods for using different source materials - cloned DNA, genomic DNA, RNA, nucleic acid from archive material and PCR products themselves - are given. The emphasis throughout is on the practical applications of the technique and detailed experimental protocols are included at all stages, backed up by advice on avoiding potential pitfalls. This volume provides a starting point for those new to PCR and will also serve as a useful reference for more experienced researchers in all areas of biological science.
