Abstract

In this book the author describes in detail the history, construction, and examination potential of the slit lamp. In particular, however, he presents a new approach – videography – that allows the ophthalmologist to document all (!) eye diseases with the slit lamp and a video camera in a practicable, rapid, and affordable manner. The necessary methods, techniques, and equipment, including converging, diverging, and contact lenses, are clearly explained in the text and four didactic videos. The 20 most important videographic settings are described, and “recipes” for their use are presented, along with diagnostic tips. The accompanying collection of clinical images represents the world’s first ever general atlas of ophthalmology from the perspective of the slit lamp. The author has already demonstrated proof of the value of ophthalmological videography in his own practice. It is his hope that this introductory book, with its many images never previously produced with a slit lamp, will stimulate others to exploit the approach’s potential. .

Abstract

In terms of general lighting applications, this work deals with the use of natural models for the heat dissipation of LEDs, their implementation into a complete LED system and ultimately its manufacturing. The result is a lighting system that represents a high technical performance in conjunction with a high aesthetic value that can be an example for the development of different LED systems.

Abstract

This work presents the design and investigation of a novel UV-lamp-system, which is based upon UV-induction lamps and a MHz-inverter equipped with normally-on junction field effect transistors (JFET). A system efficiency of some more than 27 % is verified with the prototype UV-induction lamp system, which positions between the two previous UV-systems and open up new fields of application.

Abstract

This book includes an analysis of the Jehoash Inscription Tablet, which describes renovations made to the First Temple and is considered the only written evidence of its existence. At the same time, a new technique for authenticating artifacts is described: this is especially important in determining the authenticity of artifacts collected from unprovenanced sites. Other subjects treated in the book are: the only known stone oil lamp with שבעת המינים carved onto seven nozzles, which was archaeometrically analyzed to verify its authenticity, and is thought to have been used during the Second Temple Period in rituals that necessitated that laws of purity be followed; and the James Ossuary, displaying the Aramaic inscription Ya'akov bar-Yosef akhui diYeshua (James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus), which, if genuine, might provide archaeological evidence for Jesus of Nazareth and indicate that the ossuary was that of James the Just, the older brother of Jesus.

Abstract

This book is dedicated to the life and work of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, Polish pharmacist whose world-renowned achievements include construction of the world’s first oil refinery and invention of the modern kerosene lamp. The authors also portray the history of the Galician oil industry and set it in the context of political, social and technological changes taking place in the 19th-century Central and Eastern Europe. "The work adds substantially to existing scholarship in English. As the author of the only English-language academic monograph devoted to a general history of the Galician oil industry, I can attest that this manuscript adds significant and important information, details, depth of investigation that is not provided in my book or any other book. It therefore makes a novel contribution that will be very valuable to anyone looking for a truly detailed account of Ignacy Łukasiewicz’s contribution within the context of the Galician oil industry in general." Alison Frank Johnson Professor of History and of Germanic Languages and Literatures Harvard University, Center for European Studies "The authors sketch the profiles of two outstanding Poles, pioneers of the oil industry – Ignacy Łukasiewicz, MSc. in Pharmacy, and mining engineer and geologist Witold Zglenicki, called the Polish Nobel (...) This scientific work is an interesting and captivating read. It can be used not only by scientists and students, but also by everyone who is interested in industrial cultural heritage (...)." Abstract

Fossil species appear to persist morphologically unchanged for long intervals of geologic time, punctuated by short bursts of rapid change as explained by the Ecological Evolutionary Units (EEUs). Here, morphological variation in Paleozoic atrypide morphology at the subfamily level (Atrypinae and Variatrypinae) from the Silurian and Devonian time intervals in the third Paleozoic EEU (~444-359 my) were investigated using relatively new techniques of quantitative modeling. The study explains how a group of closely related taxa in atrypide subfamilies exhibit morphological conservation through time in P3 EEU within the Eastern North America region.
