Waarom zijn er tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog meer joden uit Nederland weggevoerd en vermoord dan uit andere West-Europese landen? Op deze schrijnende vraag geeft Jodenvervolging in Nederland, Frankrijk en België eindelijk antwoord. Tientallen jaren hebben historici zich beziggehouden met het opmerkelijke verschil in de percentages omgekomen joden uit Nederland (ongeveer 75%) en landen als België (40%) en Frankrijk (25%). De historici Griffioen en Zeller doen in dit boek uitspraken over deze kwestie, waarbij zij zich als eersten baseren op grondig en toegespitst vergelijkend onderzoek. Ze hebben gekeken naar de overeenkomsten en verschillen in het bestuur van de bezetters in Nederland, Frankrijk en België, de houding van de overheden en de bevolking, en de mogelijkheden van de joodse bevolkingsgroepen om aan vervolging te ontkomen. Voor de Nederlandse situatie is het vooral opvallend dat de Duitse politie de alleenheerschappij kreeg over de voorbereiding, organisatie en uitvoering van de deportaties, buiten het overige bezettingsbestuur en de Nederlandse autoriteiten om. Na de brute razzia’s en de Februaristaking in 1941 – het enige massale, publieke protest tegen de Jodenvervolging tijdens de oorlog – voerde de bezetter de joden zo onopvallend mogelijk weg en maakte daarbij gebruik van misleiding en bedrog. Dit in tegenstelling tot wat in de zomer van 1942 in België en Frankrijk gebeurde. Van Vichy-Frankrijk geeft dit boek een onthullend en onthutsend beeld. Een ander belangrijk verschil met de twee andere landen was de late opkomst van georganiseerd verzet en onderduikmogelijkheden in Nederland. Zo vonden joods verzet en onderduik in België al snel aansluiting bij algemene verzetsbewegingen. Griffioen en Zeller voorzien met hun onderzoek in een diep gevoelde behoefte, zowel wetenschappelijk als maatschappelijk.

Entre 1939 et 1945, l'Allemagne nazie, secondée par de nombreuses complicités, a assassiné entre 5 et 6 millions de Juifs européens dans le silence quasi complet du monde. Le temps lui a manqué pour détruire le peuple juif tout entier, comme elle l'avait décidé. Telle est la réalité brute du génocide juif, en hébreu : shoah. La décision de " faire disparaître " le peuple juif de la terre signait la spécificité d'une entreprise, unique à ce jour, de modifier la configuration même de l'humanité. En ce sens, depuis Auschwitz, au-delà du seul peuple juif, notre statut même d'être humain est en question.
