This book is both a survey of practical concepts for forecasting the performance of various telecommunication systems as well as a balanced treatment of space-weather phenomena that give rise to telecommunication impairment episodes. It bridges the gap in the relationship that exists between the following two disciplines: space weather and telecommunication system performance. There are a number of books that address one of the two disciplines in some detail, but only merely mention the other as an afterthought. In this book the author has married the two disciplines so that the readership can see the connections more clearly. All professional and academic researchers in the fields of telecommunication science and technology; military and civilian telecommunication; applied aeronomy and ionospheric physics; and space-weather will find this book essential. It will also be of interest to professionals and researchers in the fields of solar and magnetospheric physics.

This brief examines current research on cooperative device-to-device (D2D) communication as an enhanced offloading technology to improve the performance of cognitive radio cellular networks. By providing an extensive review of recent advances in D2D communication, the authors demonstrate that the quality of D2D links significantly affects offloading performance in cellular networks, which motivates the design of cooperative D2D communication. After presenting the architecture of cooperative D2D communication, the challenges of capacity maximization and energy efficiency are addressed by optimizing relay assignment, power control and resource allocation. Furthermore, cooperative D2D communication is enhanced by network coding technology, and then is extended for broadcast sessions. Along with detailed problem formulation and hardness analysis, fast algorithms are developed by exploiting problem-specific characteristics such that they can be applied in practice.

This SpringerBrief examines anti-jamming transmissions in cognitive radio networks (CRNs), including several recent related research topics within this field. The author introduces the transmissions based on uncoordinated spread spectrum to address smart jammers in CRNs. The author applies game theory to investigate the interactions between secondary users and jammers while providing game theoretic solutions to suppress jamming incentives in CRNs. Later chapters evaluate the Nash equilibrium and Stackelberg equilibrium of the jamming games under various network scenarios. Professionals and researchers working in networks, wireless communications and information technology will find Anti-Jamming Transmissions in Cognitive Radio Networks valuable material as a reference. Advanced-level students studying electrical engineering and computer science will also find this brief a useful tool.

This is the very first book to present the network radar countermeasure system. It explains in detail the systematic concept of combining radar and radar countermeasures from the perspective of the information acquisition of target location, the optimization of the reconnaissance and detection, the integrated attack of the signals and facilities, and technological and legal developments concerning the networked system. It achieves the integration of the initiative and passivity, detection and jamming. The book explains how the system locates targets, completes target identification, tracks targets and compiles the data.

Life below water is the 14th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) envisaged by the United Nations and is aimed at conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. It is not difficult to argue that signals and image technologies may play an essential role in achieving the foreseen targets linked to SDG 14. Besides increasing the general knowledge of ocean health by means of data analysis, methodologies based on signal and image processing can be helpful in environmental monitoring, in protecting and restoring ecosystems, in finding new sensor technologies for green routing and eco-friendly ships, in providing tools for implementing best practices for sustainable fishing, as well as in defining frameworks and intelligent systems for enforcing sea law and making the sea a safer and more secure place. Imaging is also a key element for the exploration of the underwater world for various scopes, ranging from the predictive maintenance of sub-sea pipelines and other infrastructure projects, to the discovery, documentation, and protection of sunken cultural heritage. The scope of this Special Issue encompasses investigations into techniques and ICT approaches and, in particular, the study and application of signal- and image-based methods and, in turn, exploration of the advantages of their application in the previously mentioned areas.

This monograph is intended for the designers and would-be designers of secure and efficient wireless communication systems under intentional interference. Along with the widespread of wireless devices, especially reconfigurable software defined radios, jamming has become a serious threat to civilian communications. In this book, going beyond traditional communication system design that mainly focuses on accurate information transmission under benign environments, we aim to enhance the physical layer security of communication systems by integrating modern cryptographic techniques into transceiver design, so as to achieve secure high-speed transmission under hostile interference with high reliability and efficiency. We revisit existing jamming patterns, and introduce new jamming patterns. We analyze the weaknesses of existing anti-jamming techniques. We present innovative and feasible anti-jamming techniques, which can strengthen the inherent security of the 3G, 4G and the upcoming 5G systems with minimal and inexpensive changes to the existing CDMA, frequency hopping and OFDM schemes. We also provide benchmarks for system performance evaluation under various jamming scenarios through capacity analysis. This book includes design principles, in-depth theoretical analysis and practical design examples, and will be of interest to academic researchers as well as professionals in industry.
