Es geht um Bilder, die ihre Bildlichkeit selbst in Frage stellen. Solche Bilder findet man, wie die Beiträge des Bandes zeigen, in Kunst, Literatur, Wissenschaft und Museen ebenso wie in Photoalben, Filmen und Computersimulationen. Das Buch stellt die Frage nach dem Erkenntniswert von Bildern unter einem doppelten Horizont: einen bildkritischen und einen medienwissenschaftlichen. Indem die Beiträge neue Bilder undThesen ausgehend von ebenso reichhaltigem wie unbekanntem Material präsentieren, könnnen sie das zukünftige Potential einer Bildkritik andeuten. Ausgangspunkt stellen dabei gerade jene Bilder dar, deren Bildlichkeit in der einen oder anderen Weise prekär erscheint.

"This volume contains the essays presented at the conference that was held on 19-21 October 2005 at the University of Groningen under the auspices of the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG). The theme, Vision in Text and Image, was chosen on the one hand as a wide umbrella for practically the entire body of research being conducted in ICOG (from classical archaeology to modern literature), and on the other as a reference, albeit a modest one, towards a new, more context-oriented approach to text and image." Nowadays there is little impetus to analyse literary texts and works of visual art per se, as was much more the case in the 1960s and 1970s. So, more attention has been paid to the ties between text/image and the surrounding contemporary culture. Furthermore, the study of arts is no longer considered as totally separate from the study of non-artistic images and texts, either methodologically or ideologically. It is the aim of this volume to reveal the shifts in divisions of labour within the study of arts. Through their practical approach to research, and in some cases also by way of theoretical reflection, they illustrate the dynamics and interchange that characterise the relationship between text/image and culture.

What is an image? How can we describe the experience of looking at images, and how do they become meaningful to us? In what sense are images like or unlike propositions? Participants of the 33rd International Wittgenstein Symposium--philosophers as well as historians of art, science, and literature--provide many stimulating answers. Some of the contributions are dedicated to Wittgenstein's thoughts on images while others testify to the important role notions coined or inspired by Wittgenstein--"seeing as", "picture games" and the dichotomy of "saying and showing"--play in the field of picture theory today. This first volume of the Proceedings of the 2010 conference addresses readers interested in the history and theory of images, and in the philosophy of Wittgenstein.

Comprendre une image ? L’expérience nous enseigne qu’il faut se mettre, en la regardant, à l’écoute de sa teneur temporelle, cette polyrythmie dont elle est toute tissée. Or, les modèles historiques standard – passé et présent, ancien et nouveau, obsolescences et renaissances, moderne et postmoderne – échouent à décrire cette complexité. Prolongeant une enquête sur l’anachronisme menée dans Devant le temps, ce livre propose de redonner valeur d’usage à une notion délaissée par les sciences historiques : la survivance. Façon d’interroger, au cœur même de leur histoire, la mémoire à l’œuvre dans les images de la culture.C’est Aby Warburg (1866-1929) qui, le premier, fit de la survivance (Nachleben) le motif central de son approche anthropologique de art occidental : il est ici étudié dans sa logique, dans ses sources et dans ses résonances philosophiques, qui vont de l’historicité selon Burckhardt à l’inconscient selon Freud en passant par les survivals selon Tylor, l’éternel retour selon Nietzsche, la mémoire biologique selon Darwin, la morphologie selon Goethe, l’empathie selon Vischer, la phénoménologie du temps vécu selon Binswanger…Cette multiplicité d’approches était bien la seule voie possible pour décrire la paradoxale “ vie ” (Leben) des images. Par une telle démarche heuristique – c’est à dire jamais dogmatique –, Warburg nous introduit aux paradoxes constitutifs de l’image elle-même : sa nature de fantôme et sa capacité de revenance, de hantise ; son pouvoir de transmettre le pathos dans une chorégraphie de gestes fondamentaux ; sa structure de symptôme où se mêlent latences et crises, répétitions et différences, refoulements et après-coups.De tout cela naît un savoir nouveau. C’est une connaissance par le montage que le dernier projet de Warburg, Mnemosyne, met en œuvre de façon étonnamment actuelle. Walter Benjamin a posé qu’une histoire de la culture ne va pas sans la mise au jour d’un “ inconscient de la vision ”. Aby Warburg avait compris qu’une telle mise au jour n’est possible qu’à interroger cet “ inconscient du temps ” qu’est la survivance.
