Agriculture and food production have always been a connecting link between countries worldwide. The Netherlands and Romania have a longstanding and strong relationship working together in the field of agriculture and food. Both countries support the development of a worldwide transition to a sustainable and honest food production system. Moreover, the Netherlands and Romania respect the sustainable use of natural resources, safeguarding nature and biodiversity, and ensuring food security — as recorded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The upcoming Common Agricultural Policy requires a transition by innovation to a new and sustainable agri-food production system, which is both sustainable and more efficient while protecting the traditions of rural areas at the same time. The Netherlands and Romania aim to work strongly together as partners to make this happen. The scope of book is to present best practices from the Netherlands and Romania regarding circular economy projects and activities from the agri-food industry. These projects refer to actions focused on: closing the circle from waste to resources; climate change and ecosystem conservation; increasing the appeal and vitality of rural areas; projects that enhance the regional economy.

Pulsed Electric Fields to Obtain Healthier and Sustainable Food for Tomorrow illustrates innovative applications derived from the use of pulsed electric fields beyond microbial inactivation. The book begins with an introduction on how pulsed electric fields work and then addresses the impact of pulsed electric fields on bioaccessability/bioavailability and the development of nutraceuticals and food additives. Other sections explore the reduction of contaminants and assess the improvement of industrial process efficiency. A final section explores patents and commercial applications. This book will be a welcomed resource for anyone interested in the technological, physiochemical and nutritional perspectives of product development and the reduction of food toxins and contaminants. The concepts explored in this book could have a profound impact on addressing the concept of "food on demand," a concept that is a top priority in industry. --

Innovations in Food Systems should be: Inclusive: ensuring economic and social inclusion for all food system actors, especially smallholders, women, and youth; Sustainable: minimizing negative environmental impacts, conserving scarce natural resources, and strengthening resiliency against future shocks; Efficient: producing adequate quantities of food for global needs while minimizing postharvest loss and consumer waste; Nutritious and healthy: enabling the consumption of a diverse range of healthy, nutritious, and safe foods. These are ambitious goals that will require multidisciplinary effort-from engineering to life sciences, biotechnology, medical sciences, social sciences, and economic sciences. New technologies and scientific discoveries are the solutions to the increasing demand for sufficient, safe, healthy, and sustainable foods influenced by the increased public awareness of their importance.
