Abstract

Dance and Authenticity is an ethnography of dance performance and cultural form. It describes how dabkeh , a type of dance performed at Palestinian weddings, became a model for the Israeli Jewish debkah as a means of affirming Israeli Jewish belonging and common society. The Palestinian dabkeh , in turn, acquired nationalist meanings, especially after the 1967 war and the occupation of the West Bank. The book traces the history of these competing, and conflicting, dance forms, basing the argument principally on the ethnographic study of two Palestinian and one Israeli Jewish dance group conducted between 1998 and 1999. The result is a fascinating parallel ethnography, showing how the ethnography of dance forms contributes to evolving notions of collective national and political identity in a context of unequal power.

Abstract

Folk Music Journal is a peer-reviewed journal of research into all aspects of traditional song, music, dance, and drama. It is the journal of the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, England's national folk music and dance archive, and is sent free to all members of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. Folk Music Journal is the continuation of the Journal of the English Folk Dance and Song Society, which was itself the continuation of the Journal of the Folk-Song Society, first published in 1899, and the Journal of the English Folk Dance Society. Contents include articles, correspondence, reviews of books and sound recordings, and obituaries. Its aim is to be both scholarly and accessible, and the journal prides itself on working with authors who do not come from a traditional academic background. Although the main focus is on Britain and Ireland, no strict geographical limit is imposed.

Abstract

This book locates the philosophy of Ubuntu as the undergirding framework for indigenous dance pedagogies in local communities in Uganda. Through critical examination of the reflections and practices of selected local dance teachers, the volume reveals how issues of inclusion, belonging, and agency are negotiated through a creatively complex interplay between individuality and communality. The analysis frames pedagogies as sites where reflective thought and kinaesthetic practice converge to facilitate ever-evolving individual imagination and community innovations.
