Abstract

Annotation This book contains the successful submissions to a Special Issue of Energies on the subject area of "Engineering Fluid Dynamics." The topic of engineering fluid dynamics includes both experimental as well as computational studies. Of special interest were submissions from the fields of mechanical, chemical, marine, safety, and energy engineering. We welcomed both original research articles as well as review articles. After one year, 22 papers were submitted and 12 were accepted for publication. The average processing time was 65.2 days. The authors had the following geographical distribution: China (four); Italy (two); Korea (one); Germany (one); UK (one); Ireland (one); Australia (one); Sweden (one); Japan (one); Spain (one); Norway (one). Papers covered topics such as heat transfer in shell and helically coiled tube heat exchangers, the multiphase modeling of sprays, flashing flows, as well as mixing in a bubbling fluidized bed. Two papers related to heating ventilation and air condition (HVAC) are included, namely evaporation and condensation in the underfloor space of detached houses and air distribution in a railway vehicle. Three papers dealt with various aspects of pumps and turbines: a performance prediction method for pumps as turbines; noise radiation in a centrifugal pump; periodic fluctuations in energy efficiency in centrifugal pumps; and study of a high-pressure external gear pump. One paper used both laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) and CFD in the study of flow behind a semi-circular step cylinder. Finally, a paper investigated the influence of the equivalence ratio (ER) and feedstock particle size on birch wood gasification.

Abstract

"The proposed book is an introductory text covering the fundamentals and applications of transport phenomena in a single volume. It aims to interlink mathematics with physical concepts by solving equations using numerical techniques and explaining their industrial applications. It thus provides a foundation for advanced courses in fluid mechanics, multiphase flows and turbulence. The supplements package of the book will have lecture slides and solutions to all of the practice problems in the book"--

Abstract

This book contains a first systematic study of compressible fluid flows subject to stochastic forcing. The bulk is the existence of dissipative martingale solutions to the stochastic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. These solutions are weak in the probabilistic sense as well as in the analytical sense. Moreover, the evolution of the energy can be controlled in terms of the initial energy. We analyze the behavior of solutions in short-time (where unique smooth solutions exists) as well as in the long term (existence of stationary solutions). Finally, we investigate the asymptotics with respect to several parameters of the model based on the energy inequality. ContentsPart I: Preliminary results Elements of functional analysis Elements of stochastic analysis Part II: Existence theory Modeling fluid motion subject to random effects Global existence Local well-posedness Relative energy inequality and weak-strong uniqueness Part III: Applications Stationary solutions Singular limits

Abstract

Transport phenomena in porous media continues to be a field which attracts intensive research activity. This is primarily due to the fact that it plays an important and practical role in a large variety of diverse scientific applications. Transport Phenomena in Porous Media II covers a wide range of the engineering and technological applications, including both stable and unstable flows, heat and mass transfer, porosity, and turbulence. Transport Phenomena in Porous Media II is the second volume in a series emphasising the fundamentals and applications of research in po
