Abstract

A set of standard methods and procedures for determining the shielding effectiveness of planar materials is provided. Such materials might comprise, but are not limited to, metals, coated plastics, fiber-filled polymers, textiles, and coated fabrics. The selection of the appropriate test method to determine the level of shielding provided in the intended application, to provide a basis for comparing the measuring results, is considered. Emphasis is placed on those measurement techniques that have been adopted through incorporation into standards, both commercial and military, or that have been used extensively in practice.

Abstract

"This textbook presents the latest advances in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and features the incorporation of electromagnetic NDE techniques, which are the second most popular NDE method after ultrasonic NDE. With questions, problems, and worked out examples, the text describes biomedical applications and presents examples of modern NDE methods in the testing of medical devices. Contributors address such topics as cylindrical waveguide applications in ultrasonic evaluation, laser-ultrasonic techniques, structural health monitoring, acoustic microscopy, THz radiation, and fiber optics"-- "Today ultrasonic and electromagnetic signals are being used for characterizing materials - measuring material properties and detecting internal defects - in a variety of engineering structures, such as airplanes and space structures, civil infrastructure, nuclear power plants, pressure-vessels and pipes, as well as for inspecting human body parts, such as bones, soft tissues, tumors and unborn fetuses. In spite of the ever increasing popularity and wide range of applications of this technology by researchers in physical science and bioscience, medical technicians, factory workers and engineers, we currently have a limited supply of good books that cover both the fundamentals and the advanced applications of this technology"--

Abstract

Information to assist users of gaskets in evaluating gasket measurement techniques to determine which exhibit the properties critical to the intended application, to highlight limitations and sources of error of the competing measurement techniques, and to provide a basis for comparing the techniques is provided in this guide. Emphasis is placed on those measurement techniques that have been adopted through incorporation into standards, both commercial and military, or that have been used extensively.

Abstract

This book introduces the fundamental theory of electromagnetic ultrasonic guided waves, together with its applications. It includes the dispersion characteristics and matching theory of guided waves; the mechanism of production and theoretical model of electromagnetic ultrasonic guided waves; the effect mechanism between guided waves and defects; the simulation method for the entire process of electromagnetic ultrasonic guided wave propagation; electromagnetic ultrasonic thickness measurement; pipeline axial guided wave defect detection; and electromagnetic ultrasonic guided wave detection of gas pipeline cracks. This theory and findings on applications draw on the author’s intensive research over the past eight years. The book can be used for nondestructive testing technology and as an engineering reference work. The specific implementation of the electromagnetic ultrasonic guided wave system presented here will also be of value for other nondestructive test developers.

Abstract

This book is dedicated to the adoption of broadband microwave reflectometry (BMR)-based methods for diagnostics and monitoring applications. This electromagnetic technique has established as a powerful tool for monitoring purposes; in fact, it can balance several contrasting requirements, such as the versatility of the system, low implementation cost, real-time response, possibility of remote control, reliability, and adequate measurement accuracy. Starting from an extensive survey of the state of the art and from a clear and concise overview of the theoretical background, throughout the book, the different approaches of BMR are considered (i.e., time domain reflectometry - TDR, frequency domain reflectometry - FDR, and the TDR/FDR combined approach) and several applications are thoroughly investigated. The applications considered herein are very diverse from each other and cover different fields. In all the described procedures and methods, the ultimate goal is to endow them with a significant performance enhancement in terms of measurement accuracy, low cost, versatility, and practical implementation possibility, so as to unlock the strong potential of BMR.

Abstract

Computational Electromagnetics and Model-Based Inversion: A Modern Paradigm for Eddy Current Nondestructive Evaluation describes the natural marriage of the computer to eddy-current NDE. Three distinct topics are emphasized in the book: (a) fundamental mathematical principles of volume-integral equations as a subset of computational electromagnetics, (b) mathematical algorithms applied to signal-processing and inverse scattering problems, and (c) applications of these two topics to problems in which real and model data are used. By showing how mathematics and the computer can solve problems more effectively than current analog practices, this book defines the modern technology of eddy-current NDE. This book will be useful to advanced students and practitioners in the fields of computational electromagnetics, electromagnetic inverse-scattering theory, nondestructive evaluation, materials evaluation and biomedical imaging. Users of eddy-current NDE technology in industries as varied as nuclear power, aerospace, materials characterization and biomedical imaging will find this book to be a valuable resource as well.
