This volume offers a comprehensive depiction of the development of the gymnasium during the Roman Empire. Literary evidence for the Roman view of the Hellenistic gymnasium is discussed along with archaeological finds that suggest the transformation of gymnasia into facilities for general recreation. Other themes that are explored include the role of youths in the gymnasium, the connection between education in the gymnasium and the aristocratic class, the cult of the Muses and musical contests, and the impact of gymnasia on the educational ideal. Der Band bietet eine umfassende Darstellung der Entwicklung des Gymnasions während der Kaiserzeit. Literarische Zeugnisse zur römischen Sicht auf diese griechische Bildungsinstitution werden ebenso erörtert wie archäologische Befunde zum Funktionswandel der Gymnasien, deren Leitung und Finanzierung, die Rolle der Jugend, der Musenkult oder der Einfluss der gymnasialen Bildung auf das Bildungsideal und -niveau breiter Schichten.
