Abstract

The International Journal of Critical Diversity Studies addresses the key problematic of the construction of difference within intersecting, asymmetrical power relations. It brings together an integrated critique of hierarchical relations of privilege, domination and oppression on all axes of difference, with a particular focus on the normative orders of coloniality/modernity. A closely-knit, interdependent world struggling with the realities of heterogeneity calls for critical approaches to difference that can identify enduring and emerging processes of Othering, and articulate forms and means by which exclusion and hierarchical arrangements can be resisted and reframed. The journal therefore provides a decolonial anti-disciplinary intellectual forum in which plural, just, and ethical sociological imaginations can be cultivated and expanded.

Abstract

Abstract

Médiá prekročili hranice „socialistického tábora“ a prinášali nové idey, ideály, kultúrne vzory i spôsoby správania.

Abstract

This book critically reviews state-religion models and the ways in which different countries manage religious diversity, illuminating different responses to the challenges encountered in accommodating both majorities and minorities. The country cases encompass eight world regions and 23 countries, offering a wealth of research material suitable to support comparative research. Each case is analysed in depth looking at historical trends, current practices, policies, legal norms and institutions.By looking into state-religion relations and governance of religious diversity in regions beyond Europe, we gain insights into predominantly Muslim countries (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia), countries with pronounced historical religious diversity (India and Lebanon) and into a predominantly migrant pluralist nation (Australia). These insights can provide a basis for re-thinking European models and learning from experiences of governing religious diversity in other socio-economic and geopolitical contexts. Key analytical and comparative reflections inform the introduction and concluding chapters. This volume offers a research and study companion to better understand the connection between state-religion relations and the governance of religious diversity in order to inform both policy and research efforts in accommodating religious diversity. Given its accessible language and further readings provided in each chapter, the volume is ideally suited for undergraduate and graduate students. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers working in the wider field of ethnic, migration, religion and citizenship studies.

Abstract

Abstract

"This edited volume uses an interdisciplinary approach to art and design that not only reframes but also repositions agendas and actions to address fragmented global systems. Contributors explore the pluriverse of art and design through epistemological and methodological considerations. What kinds of sustainable ways are there for knowledge transfer, supporting plural agendas, finding novel ways for unsettling conversations, unlearning and learning and challenging power structures with marginalised groups and contexts through art and design? The main themes of the book are art and design methods, epistemologies and practices that provide critical, interdisciplinary, pluriversal and decolonial considerations. The book challenges the domination of the white logic of art and design and shifts away from the Anglo-European one-world system towards the pluriverse. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual studies, arts-based research, and design studies"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Argument In 1989, Romania, as the entire Eastern Europe, broke with communism, choosing instead the West European model of democracy. On the level of external politics, the demise of the Soviet Union encouraged Romania to realign its efforts toward the admission of the country in the Euro-Atlantic political-military structures. Hesitant at the beginning, as a consequence of the conservatory views of the main political leaders in power at the beginning of the 90's, Romania signed the European Union Association Agreement in February 1993. For the Romanians it meant the long way of "coming back home" to Europe and assuming the values of democracy through the protection of fundamental human rights and the reconsideration of the policies concerning the national and confessional minorities. In 2004, Romania became a member of NATO together with Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia, and since the beginning of 2007, a member of the European Union. Romania's integration in the Euro-Atlantic structures also meant for the Romanians a profound examination of their historical consciousness and the recovery of their European past. Certainly, history does not mean par excellence a unifying undertaking, but it can offer legitimacy, justification, and models for some of the present dilemmas. Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the educational potential of history. Thus, through national and international scientific studies and conferences, the historians can recompose the common past of the Romanians and other European peoples, the Europeanization process of the Romanian culture and society in the modern epoch and the birth of the Romanians'consciousness of Europeanness. Such an undertaking is also taken by the volume Culture, Elites and European Integration (Culture, Elites et Intégration européenne), which gathers the scientific papers of the Conference European Integration-Between Tradition and Modernity, organized on 27-28 October 2011. Undoubtedly, the Romanians have a common European historical past. Romania's present space belonged to the Roman Empire for a long period of time during the antiquity. This way, the one Latin people in Eastern Europe was born, an important historical argument in their European option. Undergoing the major experiences that marked European history, from the separation of the Roman Empire into the Eastern and Western empires to the Great Schism in 1056 and later the birth of the national states at the beginning of the modern epoch, the Romanians formulated concrete options for the reintegration in the West European system of values. Subsequently, for the Romanians the entire process of the birth of modern society was under the sign of European values and models of society. Its turn under Soviet influence at the end of the Second World War changed Romania's way from the European course, which it had followed since the 19th century. On a historiographical level, Romania's European integration implies both a historical and a cultural process of re-evaluating its past. In this context, the studies in the present volume bring into light events, moments and projects that are relevant for the way the Romanians relate themselves to the common history of Europe.Cornel Sigmirean.

Abstract

This book critically engages with dominant ideas of cultural homogeneity in the Nordic countries and contests the notion of homogeneity as a crucial determinant of social cohesion and societal security. Showing how national identities in the Nordic region have developed historically around notions of cultural and racial homogeneity, it exposes the varied histories of migration and the longstanding presence of ethnic minorities and indigenous people in the region that are ignored in dominant narratives. With attention to the implications of notions of homogeneity for the everyday lives of migrants and racialised minorities in the region, as well as the increasing securitisation of those perceived not to be part of the homogenous nation, this volume provides detailed analyses of how welfare state policies, media, and authorities seek to manage and govern cultural, religious, and racial differences. With studies of national minorities, indigenous people and migrants in the analysis of homogeneity and difference, it sheds light on the agency of minorities and the intertwining of securitisation policies with notions of culture, race, and religion in the government of difference. As such it will appeal to scholars and students in social sciences and humanities with interests in race and ethnicity, migration, postcolonialism, Nordic studies, multiculturalism, citizenship, and belonging.
