Elk overlijden leidt tot vragen. Een overlijden in de gevangenis des te meer, gezien de verantwoordelijkheid van de staat voor de gedetineerde. Het Europees Hof voor de rechten van de mens (EHRM) legt lidstaten de verplichting op om onderzoek te doen naar elk overlijden in de gevangenis. In dat onderzoek moet een aantal vragen aan de orde komen. Heeft de staat adequate medische zorg geboden? Was het overlijden te voorzien en te voorkomen? Hoe is gereageerd op ziektesignalen? In het geval van zelfmoord eist het Hof bijkomende opheldering. Ook hier ligt de klemtoon van het EHRM op het voorkomen waar mogelijk en onderzoeken waar nodig. Heeft de betrokkene zich suïcidaal geuit? Heeft de betrokkene eerder een poging tot suïcide gedaan? Zijn er voldoende maatregelen genomen om de suïcide te voorkomen? Dit boek is het resultaat van een recent onderzoek naar suïcide in penitentiaire inrichtingen en suïcides gepleegd onder de zorg van de politie, verricht in opdracht van de Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen (DJI). Er is in dit onderzoek naar gestreefd om helder te krijgen ‘wie suïcide in detentie pleegt'. Tevens is in kaart gebracht welk onderzoek verricht is na een overlijden door suïcide en wat het resultaat was van dit onderzoek. Het boek is opgezet vanuit mensenrechtelijk perspectief. Bij elke vraag hebben de auteurs zich gericht op de verplichtingen die voortkomen uit de rechtspraak van het EHRM. De bevindingen in dit boek zijn van groot belang om zo veel mogelijk suïcides te voorkomen en van elke suïcide te blijven leren. De auteurs hebben een medische en verpleegkundige dan wel juridische achtergrond. Beide perspectieven komen in deze publicatie aan bod.

Le suicide frappe partout et à tous les âges, de l'enfance à la vieillesse. On connaît pourtant fort mal ce phénomène encore tabou. Qu'en est-il exactement ? Pourquoi, en fin de compte, décide-t-on de mettre un terme à sa vie ? Y a-t-il des différences entre pays ? Des différences entre les hommes et les femmes ? Des groupes à risque ? Est-ce que la dépression, l'alcool, les abus et les négligences familiales peuvent être perçus comme des facteurs de risque ?
