Abstract

Radiologic evaluation of an infant or child suspected of having a surgical disease can be a complex problem. With this volume, the editors have created a book focused on pediatric imaging written by pediatricians, pediatric surgeons and pediatric radiologists. This book is a collection of over 200 case reports. The concept is a case study approach: The reader is given radiologic images (plain radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, etc.) and the clinical history of the patient. On the basis of this information, the reader is asked to identify a diagnostic and therapeutic strategy. Each case is complemented by information on the disease affecting the patient and the management of the case shown, including therapy and follow-up. This educational text is targeted at all medical professionals faced with a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic problems affecting infants and children.

Abstract

Pediatric Surgery Digest offers a praxis-oriented and up-to-date overview of all subjects in pediatric surgery according to the European surgical curriculum. Additionally, interdisciplinary aspects concerning pediatrics, adult surgery, obstetrics and other disciplines working with children were considered. The tables enable quick access to indications for the operative and conservative therapy with schematic step-by-step illustrations for nearly all surgical procedures. Practical information on child-adapted dosage for pharmacotherapy as well as age-specific injury patterns from scalding in young children to spleen rupture in teenaged vehicle users are taken into consideration. The surgical role in modern pediatric oncology is also presented according to the guidelines of SIOP. European pediatric surgeons, experts in their field, have written this book for students and trainees, but also for anybody who treats children surgically.

Abstract

Pediatric Bone Sarcomas: Epiphysiolysis before excision addresses malignant bone tumours by focusing upon physeal distraction (epiphysiolysis) before excision. This technique has long been used by the authors of this book in preserving the joint in metaphyseal bone tumours in children. They are subsequently now sharing their knowledge and experience with all those in the field of orthopedic surgery. In the last 30 years, the outcome for patients affected by malignant bone tumours has improved dramatically. Better knowledge of the disease, improved imaging methods, new surgical techniques and particularly the advent of chemotherapy have brought about increasing success in this field. Preserving the life of these patients 30 years ago was the only aim of physicians. Now, survival rates have increased and the new challenges posed to the surgeon are on preserving the limb and its function, whilst avoiding complications. 30 years ago joint preservation close to the bone tumour was unheard of. More recently, this is a desire and possible outcome common to everyone who treats these patients. Targeted primarily towards orthopedic surgeons and pediatric oncologists this book will also be of interest to all those in the fields of orthopedics, oncology, pediatrics and surgery.

Abstract

Clear and effective communication in a clinical context has enormous benefits, and especially in pediatrics, where assessing patients’ symptoms is more challenging. Clinicians who interview well gather extra data, to be sure, but also gain from a number of other positive outcomes, from happier patients to fewer law suits. The unique perspective on pediatric interviewing offered in this book reflects the author’s breadth of training and experience, which includes being a solo pediatric practitioner for ten years and completing a residency in psychiatry and child psychiatry. Currently associate professor of pediatrics at the Marshall University School of Medicine, Prof. Binder has taught pediatrics and interviewing to successive generations of medical students. His easy-to-read, compelling, and comprehensive guide outlines effective strategies for interviewing parents and children efficiently. Topics covered include engaging patients and families, efficiently and smoothly obtaining a history of present illness and making a good differential diagnosis, uncovering hidden agendas, collaborative discussion in diagnosis and treatment, practicing family oriented care, taking a full social history, and all other aspects of carrying out the pediatric interview. Offering clear, practical tips and a wide range of targeted case examples, this invaluable title seamlessly combines the biological and psychological aspects of patient care. Based on relationship theory, the underlying foundation of successful clinical interviewing and a major determinant of optimal diagnosis and treatment, this is an indispensable guide for all clinicians engaged in the care of children and adolescents.
