Abstract

Diffusion – defined as mass, amount, or particle transport process – is the most essential transport property besides viscosity and thermal conductivity. Diffusion is widely used in nature, technical and scientific applications, ranging from diffusion in all kinds of gases, liquids, solids, electrolytes and their mixtures. Due to the large amount of data, the volume LB IV/15 “Diffusion in Gases, Liquids, and Electrolytes” is divided into three subvolumes. Part A: Gases in Gases, Liquids and their Mixtures. Part B: Liquids in Liquids and Liquid Mixtures. Part C: Ions and Electrolytes in Liquids, Electrolytes and Molten Salts. The presented subvolume A includes the main chapters Measurement Methods, Diffusion in Pure Gases, Diffusion in Gaseous Mixtures, Diffusion of Gas/Vapor in Gases or Liquids and Diffusion of Gases in Solution. Due to the very different and widespread measurement methods, a precise description of these methods is given.

Abstract

An overview of essential concepts in supramolecular chemistry covering basic and applied research work. Macrocyclic Chemistry: Current Trends and Future Perspectives illustrates essential concepts in this expanding research field covering both basic and applied studies. Written by well-known experts from around the world, the topics of the chapters range from new macrocyclic architectures with different functions and self-assembly processes through to the modeling and dynamics of such systems. The content also reflects on application possibilities in analytical chemistry, separation processes, material preparation and medicine. Thus this book serves as a creative source of research strategies and methodic tools. Providing an excellent overview of the field, this book will a valuable resource for researchers in industry and academic institutions as well as for teachers of science and graduate students. Karsten Gloe is Professor of Coordination Chemistry at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, TU Dresden, Germany. This book is devoted to the long-standing tradition of the International Symposia on Macrocyclic Chemistry (ISMC) and published to coincide with the 30th meeting, Dresden, Germany.

Abstract

"Adhesion of Cells, Viruses and Nanoparticles" describes the adhesion of cells, viruses and nanoparticles starting from the basic principles of adhesion science, familiar to postgraduates, and leading on to recent research results. The underlying theory is that of van der Waals forces acting between cells and substrates, embodied in the molecules lying at the surfaces, together with the geometry and elasticity of the materials involved. The first part describes the fundamental background to adhesion principles, including the phenomenology, the important equations and the modeling ideas. Then the mechanisms of adhesion are explored in the second part, including the elastic deformations of spheres and the importance of the energy of adhesion as measured in various tests. It is demonstrated that adhesion of cells is statistical and depends on Brownian movement and on the complex multiple contacts that can form as cells move around. Then, detailed chapters on cell adhesion, contact of viruses and aggregation of nanoparticles follow in Part 3. Finally, the last chapter looks to the future understanding of cell adhesion and points out some interesting directions of research, development and treatment of diseases related to these phenomena. This book is an ideal resource for researchers on adhesion molecules, receptors, cell and tissue culturing, virus infection, toxicity of nanoparticles and bioreactor fouling. It can also be used to support undergraduate and Masters level teaching courses. "This is a fascinating book and it is an invaluable resource for understanding particle-particle/surface adhesion at micro- and nano- scales. I intend to keep one for my future reference and highly recommend it to my students." (Prof. Zhibing Zhang, School of Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham, UK).

ICPAC 2014, a biennial meeting, was held in Mauritius in June 2014. The theme of the conference was “Crystallizing Ideas: The Role of Chemistry” and it matched the declaration of the year 2014 as the International Year of Crystallography. ICPAC 2014 was attended by 150 participants from 30 countries. The chapters in this book reflect a wide range of fundamental and applied research in chemistry and interdisciplinary subjects. Crystallizing Ideas - The Role of Chemistry is written for graduates, postgraduates, researchers in industry and academia who have an interest in the fields ranging from fundamental to applied chemistry.
