Abstract

Despite advances in materials and sterilisation, patients who receive biomaterials of medical device implants are still at risk of developing an infection around the implantation site. This book reviews the fundamentals of biomaterials and medical device related infections and methods and materials for the treatment and prevention of infection. The first part of the book provides readers with an introduction to the topic including analyses of biofilms, diagnosis and treatment of infection, pathology and topography. The second part of the book discusses a range of established and novel technolo

Abstract

Biodegradable and Biocompatible Polymer Nanocomposites: Processing, Characterization, and Applications brings together the latest research, highlighting cutting-edge applications in this exciting field. Sections introduce biodegradable and biocompatible polymers and the fundamentals regarding synthesis, structure, properties, biocompatibility and biodegradability, provide in-depth coverage of methods and techniques for processing, spectroscopic and microscopic analysis, dielectric, thermal, and electrical conductivity, and incorporation of functionalized nanoparticles, and green synthesized nanoparticles. The second part of the book guides the reader through the properties and preparation of biodegradable and biocompatible polymer nanocomposites for a range of specific, targeted, state-of-the-art applications across biomedicine, electronic, energy storage, environment and packaging. Finally, sustainability assessment, environmental impact, and recycling strategies are discussed in detail.

Abstract

The engineering and utilization of biocomposites is a research field of major scientific and industrial interest worldwide. The biocomposite area is extensive and spans from structured and solid biocomposites (e.g., reinforced bioabsorbable polymers), films (e.g., antimicrobial barriers), to soft biocomposites (e.g., use of alginates, collagen and nanocellulose as components in bioinks for 3D bioprinting). Key aspects in this respect are the appropriate engineering and production of biomaterials, nanofibres, bioplastics, their functionalization enabling intelligent and active materials, processes for effective manufacturing of biocomposites and the corresponding characterization for understanding their properties. The current Special Issue emphasizes the bio-technological engineering of novel biomaterials and biocomposites, considering also important safety aspects in the production and use of bio- and nanomaterials.

Abstract

Each year more than 500,000 arthritic or injured hips are replaced by orthopaedic surgeons around the world. A critical element in the longevity of each replacement is the successful interaction of bone tissue with biomaterial. The same critical element epplies in other joint replacements, in the hundreds of thousands of dental implants performed each year, and in a widening range of veterinary applications. To address the diverse interests and areas of expertise related to the subject of bone-biomaterial interaction, a conference in Toronto at the end of 1990 brought together forty scientists from research teams in Canada, Europe, Japan, and the USA, as well as representatives of 23 of the world's major health-care companies. They came together to exchange information and informed opinion on developments which affect the design, manufacture, and use of bone implants. This volume includes not only the papers presented at the conference by also the debate and discussion which followed each one, as recorded by video cameras and a team of court stenographers. Thus the reader has a unique opportunity to experience the full range of current research and opinion, in all its diversity, as it was explored at the conference.Topics of the papers include current understanding of the influence of materials surfaces on bone generation; bone cell response to materials; molecular biological probes to study the interface; mechanical influence on interfacial biology; and retrieval analysis for interpreting interfacial phenomena.Debate following the papers focused on such issues as the relative importance of mechanical stress and the issue of weight-bearing in the choice of biomaterial; the effect of cleaning and sterilization methods on tissue response in the bony implantation bed; the existence of evidence that metal alloys, implanted in bone, adversely affect biological tissue. Both the texts of papers and the transcripts of discussions have been.
