Narratives of Architectural Education provides an overview of life as an architecture student, detailinghow a layperson may develop an architectural identity. This book proposes becoming an architect as a personal narrative of professional development structured around various stages and challenges associated with identity transformation. Using a case study of aspiring architects along multiple time points of their professional education, Thompson investigates the occupational identity of architects; how individuals construct a sense of themselves as future architects and position themselves within the architectural community. This book provides previously unexamined insights into not just the academic development of an architect, but also the holistic and experiential aspects of architectural education. It would be ideal for those in the educational field of architecture, to include students, educators, interns, and mentors.

Almost 40% of architecture graduates choose not to practise as architects. Instead, by 'leaving' their chosen profession, this surprisingly large but vastly overlooked cohort are making significant contributions to a wide range of other sectors, from politics to videogame design, demonstrating that architectural training can be a pathway to roles, and even leadership opportunities across a variety of other professions. Architecture's Afterlife is the first book to examine the sectors into which these graduates migrate, and to identify the transferable skills that are learned, but not always taught, in their degree programmes, and that prove most useful in their new careers. The book - a result of a three-year pan-European study funded by Erasmus+ - provides a roadmap for increasing graduate employment, addressing skills shortages across all sectors and adapting curricula to changing professional landscapes. It is therefore essential reading for all those responsible for curriculum design and delivery in architecture and other disciplines, including deans, professors, postgraduate researchers and policy makers, as well as students and professionals seeking to expand their career prospects.

The active engagement of architecture students in the design and construction of real projects is today an important dimension at more than 150 universities worldwide. Yet this emerging field continues to suffer from an insubstantial scholarly foundation. An initiative of universities in North America has developed a consistent and innovative practice model, which sets a new standard for this key aspect of education and professional practice.

‘Speeltijd.

Breuckland is a post-crisis utopia for dense yet ordinary urban living. Not very different from Brooklyn, Breuckland is the alter ego of the contemporary metropolis, offering an uncompromised testing ground as an alternative to standard discourse on urban strategies, the rhetoric of sustainability, and iconographic thinking about the city. No longer vulnerable to threats such as the foreclosure crisis, the rising sea level, and gentrifying real-estate operations, the contemporary city is looking at Breuckland as a playground for design research on newarchitectural strategies.A threefold utopian image of Brooklyn presents an extrapolation of several architectural projects and urban design interventions that touch on a variety of strategies concerning housing, infrastructure, and services. Spaced throughout the borough of Brooklyn, these projects transform the city fabric into Breuckland as a response to the monoculture in urban space making.Breuckland as designed utopia is a tool to transform, derail, reinvent, and crossbreed existing modes of operations and their associated physical forms. No longer proposing one overall solution on a tabula rasa, Breuckland looks at a variety of strategies.
