L’ouvrage vise à éclairer les débats actuels sur l’éducation à la citoyenneté à travers l’analyse de deux postures sociales distinctes mais complémentaires : - l’autonomie du jugement moral, qui implique la différenciation entre le point de vue moral et le point de vue légal et, de ce fait, le développement de l’esprit critique et de la responsabilité personnelle. - la coopération sociale, qui implique la participation à la vie publique, la volonté et la capacité d’écoute et de communication. L’hypothèse développée est que l’accomplissement de ces deux objectifs socio-politiques repose sur le processus psychologique de la conceptualisation de l’expérience de l’individu. Ce processus est en grande partie médiatisé par l’interaction sociale et l’échange argumentatif. Des exemples de pratiques pédagogiques sont utilisés pour illustrer ces positions et analyser les difficultés rencontrées dans leur mise en œuvre.
