Throughout his entire career – Siza has never provided a complete project in AutoCAD, editable DWG format. In our case, he provided three. Siza, generously, allowed us to disclose, that he “authorized us to make changes to the drawings so that they correspond to the constructed project (as built)”. It would be impossible for the team of architects at House Details, to have a greater honour. We are deeply grateful to Siza for the utmost confidence he had in our team and for having enriched us so much and in so many different ways during this process that lasted over three years and took many thousands of hours of work. This book was made with sacrifice, great joy, the deepest respect, and all the rigour that was humanly possible. Again, we express our deepest gratitude to Álvaro Siza. We have built the most radical house we have ever made, an infinite plane facing the infinite sea. A house facing the Atlantic Ocean, at the water's edge on a beach of Cadiz, like a piece of earthly paradise, where the Romans once lived in nearby Bolonia. We built a powerful podium in Roman travertine whose upper horizontal plane becomes the protagonist of the space. Inside the podium, underneath this platform like a temenos, is the house. Above and behind the stony platform, we have erected stone walls to protect us from the strong prevailing winds. As if it were an acropolis. A temenos where the gods descend to converse with humans and toast with Sherry on this plane on high looking out onto the infinite sea. The house of the infinite.

A House to Live With is the first book to comprehensively explore van der Laan's residential buildings. Sixteen of them, built between 1966 and 1985, are featured in full detail through photographs and plans newly produced for this book, and analysed with regard to their compositional and design principles. Essays examine the mathematical relationships of numbers and volumes that are fundamental to van der Laan's designs, alongside discussion of how he was influenced by ancient Roman architecture.
