Christian Democracy has been playing a leading role in political life on the European continent since the Second World War. It is striking that this influential political movement has hardly been studied from an international-comparative perspective. Therefore, between 15 and 18 November 1995, an international and interdisciplinary colloquium was organized in Leuven to shed more light on the historical role of Christian Democracy on the European continent and more specifically in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. This volume presents the proceedings of that colloquium. For each of these five countries, the setting of Christian democracy in the political landscape, its party organization and its social support are studied. New in the concept of this study is that these aspects are linked to an exploration of the social impact of Christian democracy. Thus the authors investigate the influence of Christian Democratic parties on political institutions (parliamentary democracy and European integration) and socio-economic structures (the collective-bargaining economy and the welfare state). Finally, they look at the policy positions they have taken in the religious and ethical field. The volume concludes with two essays on the collaboration between Christian democratic parties at the European level and their rapprochement with the conservative parties. The future development of European Christian Democracy is also considered. This book, which deals with a contemporary phenomenon, has been written by historians, political scientists, theologians and philosophers. English may be considered the basic language of this publication, although papers in French, German and Italian are also included.

In this book, the dynamics of a nascent political organization in relation to the question of powers and institutions of the Southern Kingdom during the years of 1943-44 are analyzed. The Southern party of DC, taking advantage of both old and new forms of politics, would soon benefit, in addition to the experience of Luigi Sturzo’s populism, of an emerging political class and of the increased weight of the Church in the material and civil crisis caused by the war. In Naples, one of the foremost political headquarters of the liberated Italy, the Catholic Party faced the difficulty of an unconditional membership carried out by the ecclesiastical hierarchy and large sections of the populace to traditional monarchical authority, while its leading group acted from the inside in the context of the pluralistic political and democracy system going out in Cln.

A long-serving leader of the Christian Democratic Party from mid-1940s to late 1950s, Fiorentino Sullo led an intense political action in the province of Avellino, combining exercise of power and political planning, programmatic appeals and rational distribution of resources, political and administrative management of State’s intervention in the public sphere and its bodies, efficient control and modernization of the territory. For over fifteen years, he intended to address and solve the typical dilemma faced by every modernizing elite and posed by the clash between the poles of conservation and transformation. His political career was characterized by a deep understanding of the traditional traits of the local communities, persistent and inevitable in the development of the relationship between politics and society. He also highlighted, in his activities, a strong orientation towards political change and the socio-economic development of a backward periphery.
