Né à Solna (Suède) en 1944, Anders Petersen est un photographe mondialement connu. C'est à Hambourg, ville portuaire riche en cafés où se mêlent les êtres les plus disparates, qu'à 18 ans il s'immerge dans la vie nocturne et la contre-culture. Devenu l'hôte assidu du café Lehmitz, il y puisera le thème, les décors, les modèles de sa première série de photographies (1978), qui lui valut une reconnaissance immédiate et est devenue depuis lors l'emblème de tous les développements futurs de son oeuvre. Élève à ses débuts de Christer Strömholm, le plus grand photographe suédois de l'époque, Anders Petersen partage avec lui une même approche du monde et une même forme d'esthétique, essentiellement celle d'une photographie en noir et blanc ayant l'acuité et le dynamisme du snapshot, mais également un respect et un souci de l'autre, fondamentaux dès lors qu'il s'agit du portrait, autre grand thème commun aux deux photographes. Quelque 40 ans après l'acquisition de vingt-cinq épreuves de sa toute première série, la Bibliothèque nationale de France lui consacre aujourd'hui une grande exposition monographique, une première à Paris. L'ensemble constitué met en évidence le fil conducteur qui lie les différentes périodes du travail de Petersen et permet de mesurer la permanence et l'approfondissement d'un style qui dès le commencement répondait à une recherche personnelle fondée sur le contact humain et la liberté du regard. Prolongeant et reflétant l'événement, cet ouvrage présente plus de 300 photographies de l'artiste, allant de Café Lehmitz aux récentes séries Roma (2012) et Reggio Emilia (2012). Sont ainsi rendus manifestes l'effet d'univers qu'engendre l'ensemble de l'oeuvre, ainsi que l'invention et l'évolution d'une écriture profondément intuitive et sensuelle.

The fields of photography and architecture have long been closely linked : photography provides a powerful way for architecture to be appreciated from a distance, and the camera lens alters and enhances buildings so that they can be appreciated anew, even by those already intimately familiar with them. Concrete explores this deep and often complex relationship, with particular attention paid not only to how photography influences the perception of architecture but also the very design itself. Beginning with the invention of photography in the nineteenth century, this volume presents iconic images of urban architecture and townscapes that are organized thematically rather than simply chronologically. The editors have assembled over two hundred images from numerous notable photographers, including : Georg Aerni, Adolphe Braun, Balthasar Burkhard, Lynn Cohen, Walker Evans, Lucien Hervé, Germaine Krull, Stanley Kubrick, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and William Henry Fox Talbot. Originally published to coincide with an exhibition celebrating the Fotomuseum Winterthur’s twentieth anniversary, Concrete : Photography and Architecture is an exhaustive investigation of architectural photography and is as beautiful as it is informative.
