Record sales have been steadily declining ever since the rise of file sharing networks such as Napster in 1999. Now that consumers have the option to acquire music for free, bands need a way to convince their fans to actually spend money on their music. In this research, we’ve analyzed if performing on a major festival leads to an increase in music sales. We’ve approached this research by analyzing the evolution of the album sales for ten albums. Our findings indicate that performing on a major festival does indeed lead to an increase in the album sales. A major boost in sales will occur around the months of the performance itself, but even in the long term, an increase in the album sales can be observed. Making statements about the long term effects is however impossible, as the model faces an endogeneity problem.
