Abstract

Since The Theory of the Moiré Phenomenon was published it became the main reference book in its field. It provided for the first time a complete, unified and coherent theoretical approach for the explanation of the moiré phenomenon, starting from the basics of the theory, but also going in depth into more advanced research results. However, it is clear that a single book cannnot cover the full breadth of such a vast subject, and indeed, this original volume admittently concentrated on only some aspects of the moiré theory, while other interesting topics had to be left out. Perhaps the most important area that remained beyond the scope of the original book consists of the moiré effects that occur between correlated random or aperiodic structures. These moiré effects are known as Glass patterns, after Leon Glass who described them in the late 1960s. However, this branch of the moiré theory remained for many years less widely known and less understood than its periodic or repetitive counterpart: Less widely known because moiré effects between aperiodic or random structures are less frequently encountered in everyday’s life, and less understood because these effects did not easily lend themselves to the same mathematical methods that so nicely explained the classical moiré effects between periodic or repetitive structures.

Abstract

This is a collection of Isaac Levi's philosophical papers. Over the period represented by the work here, Professor Levi has developed an interrelated set of views, in the tradition of Peirce and Dewey, on epistemology and the philosophy of science and social science. This focus has been on the problem of induction and the growth of knowledge, the foundations of probability and the theory of rational decision-making. His most important essays in these areas are assembled here, with an introduction setting out their main themes and connections. As a whole the volume presents a coherent, elaborated position which will be of great interest to a range of philosophers, decision theorists, welfare and social choice theorists and cognitive scientists.

Abstract

There was racism in the ancient world, after all. This groundbreaking book refutes the common belief that the ancient Greeks and Romans harbored "ethnic and cultural," but not racial, prejudice. It does so by comprehensively tracing the intellectual origins of racism back to classical antiquity. Benjamin Isaac's systematic analysis of ancient social prejudices and stereotypes reveals that some of those represent prototypes of racism--or proto-racism--which in turn inspired the early modern authors who developed the more familiar racist ideas. He considers the literature from classical Greece to late antiquity in a quest for the various forms of the discriminatory stereotypes and social hatred that have played such an important role in recent history and continue to do so in modern society. Magisterial in scope and scholarship, and engagingly written, The Invention of Racism in Classical Antiquity further suggests that an understanding of ancient attitudes toward other peoples sheds light not only on Greco-Roman imperialism and the ideology of enslavement (and the concomitant integration or non-integration) of foreigners in those societies, but also on the disintegration of the Roman Empire and on more recent imperialism as well. The first part considers general themes in the history of discrimination; the second provides a detailed analysis of proto-racism and prejudices toward particular groups of foreigners in the Greco-Roman world. The last chapter concerns Jews in the ancient world, thus placing anti-Semitism in a broader context.
