Dans une esthétique qui reste, encore en cette fin du XIXe siècle, étroitement liée à la mimesis (imitation), et se doit de rechercher l’illusion de la vie et de la chair, le marbre est le matériau par excellence de cette imitation. Il favorise une des caractéristiques de l’art de Rodin, sa capacité à jouer de la lumière et des ombres, des clairs-obscurs et des parties plus ou moins saillantes. Ce côté coloriste de sa sculpture l’a fait souvent comparer au Corrège, l’un des grands maîtres italiens de la Renaissance de l'école de Parme. Cette exposition sur ses marbres et l’ouvrage qui l’accompagne restituent l'évolution du « style » de Rodin dans l’exploitation de ce matériau : du fini, du précis voire du peaufiné au flou, au non finito (l’aspect brut inachevé), et à la multiplication dans le travail de toutes ces traces que l'artiste, pour répondre à la tradition, aurait dû effacer au fur et à mesure de son travail, au nom du credo classique fondé sur l'idéal de transparence mimétique. Le non finito, marque de l'art de Rodin, dès les années 1886, est autant une réflexion sur l'inachèvement que sur la trace. Une partie de l’ouvrage est consacrée à la photographie et montre comment ont été regardées ces œuvres.

Questo volume presenta gli esiti degli studi e delle ricerche intrapresi in occasione del restauro del Busto di Medusa di Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In un brillante saggio introduttivo di Maddalena Cima l'immagine di Medusa e la sua interpretazione nelle arti figurative, tra età arcaica e tardo antico, sono analizzati attraverso la trama del mito e delle fonti poetiche classiche, premessa indispensabile per comprendere l'assoluta novità dell'interpretazione berniniana della favola antica. La vicenda critica relativa all'attribuzione del Busto di Medusa a Gian Lorenzo Bernini è magistralmente ripercorsa da Irving Lavin in un saggio di grande fascino, mentre Elena Bianca Di Gioia ricostruisce le vicende storiche legate all'arrivo della scultura in Campidoglio nel 1731. La seconda parte del volume è interamente dedicata al restauro della scultura. Le indagini esperite e i dati raccolti sono presentati con l'intento di contribuire ad una più ampia comprensione e conoscenza delle opere e delle tecniche di lavorazione delle sculture di Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
