Dans la métaphore, on voit ordinairement un usage particulier, “ figuratif ”, du langage, propre à la poésie et à la rhétorique. Lakoff et Johnson critiquent ce point de vue ; ils montrent que notre langage tout entier, dans son usage le plus quotidien et terre à terre, est traversé par la métaphore. Il y a des aspects fondamentaux de notre expérience dont nous ne pouvons pas ne pas parler de façon métaphorique, tout simplement parce que les concepts au moyen desquels nous appréhendons ces aspects de l’expérience sont d’emblée métaphoriques. Il y a métaphore, selon Lakoff et Johnson, lorsque nous appréhendons quelque chose – un aspect de la réalité – en termes d’autre chose. L’étude minutieuse de notre langage quotidien révèle que nous traitons le temps sur le modèle de l’espace, la discussion sur le modèle de la guerre, etc. Ces métaphores (largement culturelles) ne sont pas de simples façons de parler : elles sont constitutives de notre pensée, de notre expérience du monde, et informent ce que nous appelons la “ réalité ”.

Why do painters sometimes wish they were poets--and why do poets sometimes wish they were painters? What happens when Rembrandt spells out Hebrew in the sky or Poussin spells out Latin on a tombstone? What happens when Virgil, Ovid, or Shakespeare suspend their plots to describe a fictitious painting? In Mute Poetry, Speaking Pictures, Leonard Barkan explores such questions as he examines the deliciously ambiguous history of the relationship between words and pictures, focusing on the period from antiquity to the Renaissance but offering insights that also have much to say about modern art and literature. The idea that a poem is like a picture has been a commonplace since at least ancient Greece, and writers and artists have frequently discussed poetry by discussing painting, and vice versa, but their efforts raise more questions than they answer. From Plutarch ("painting is mute poetry, poetry a speaking picture") to Horace ("as a picture, so a poem"), apparent clarity quickly leads to confusion about, for example, what qualities of pictures are being urged upon poets or how pictorial properties can be converted into poetical ones. The history of comparing and contrasting painting and poetry turns out to be partly a story of attempts to promote one medium at the expense of the other. At the same time, analogies between word and image have enabled writers and painters to think about and practice their craft. Ultimately, Barkan argues, this dialogue is an expression of desire: the painter longs for the rich signification of language while the poet yearns for the direct sensuousness of painting.

Romancier bien connu du pantheon litteraire belge, Georges Eekhoud (1854-1927) ne s'est pas limite aux pratiques d'auteur prestigieuses et à la langue française. Son "hard labour" quotidien -- comme il le qualifiait lui-même -- de chroniqueur bilingue et de feuilletoniste anonyme franchissait continuellement les frontieres linguistiques et nationales. Tantôt douanier, tantôt contrebandier, il a colporte, adapte et manipule des discours patriotiques en français et en neerlandais entre Anvers, Paris et Bruxelles. L'etude de ces activites inedites, aux confins de l'ecriture et de la traduction, offre une vision meconnue des relations interculturelles en Belgique à la Belle Époque.

Begin 2015 startte het Radio 1-programma Hautekiet met de Heerlijk Helder-campagne. Doel: recht maken wat krom is, namelijk de vaak nodeloos onbegrijpelijke communicatie van politici, juristen, overheidsdiensten, banken, dokters en musea. #HeerlijkHelder werd een begrip. Luisteraars stuurden massaal veel voorbeelden van onheldere taal in. Teksten werden herschreven en ambassadeurs als Rik Torfs en Koen Geens schaarden zich achter de actie. Jan Hautekiet en Ann De Craemer, voorzitster van het Heerlijk Helderpanel, geven in dit boek tal van voorbeelden van krommunicatie, die weleens op de lachspieren werken. Heerlijk Helder is geen stijlgids, maar het vertelt wel waarom mensen wollige taal gebruiken, en waarom het voor henzelf en hun publiek beter is dat ze dat niet doen.
