Belgian artist David Claerbout is known for investigating the conceptual impact of the passage of time through his use of video and digital photography. His work skillfully interrogates both moving and still imagery to suggest an otherworldly level of existence, something that might refer to a specific place or event, but the timeline of which is not clear, oscillating between both past and present. His oeuvre is characterized by a meticulous attention to production details, painstakingly created, often over a period of years. With each of his projects Claerbout creates a small number of drawings, which help him to reflect upon and comprehend his concepts more thoroughly. Up to now, these works have not been afforded the attention they deserve. This publication addresses that oversight in a striking way, presenting, to a larger public for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Claerbout’s drawings created over a period of two decades.

C'est à Ornans, petite ville située au coeur de la Franche-Comté, que Gustave Courbet voit le jour en 1819. Il est l'aîné et l'unique garçon d'une fratrie de quatre enfants. Sa famille est unie et aisée, grâce à l'important patrimoine terrien du père. Toute sa vie, Courbet témoigne de l'affection qu'il porte aux siens. Il a laissé d'eux de nombreux portraits, parfois au milieu des personnages de ses grandes compositions. Le même attachement le relie à sa région natale qui sert de décor pour nombre de ses tableaux. Au cours de sa vie, Courbet visite les pays du Nord où il est apprécié, il habite Paris, se rend en Saintonge, berceau de son ami Castagnary, en Normandie avec le peintre américain Whistler ou encore à Montpellier à l'invitation de Bruyas, l'ami et mécène, mais il revient toujours vers la Franche-Comté. C'est avec une "inébranlable confiance en lui-même et une indomptable tenacité" (Castagnary) que Courbet se lance dans une carrière artistique prolifique, comme peintre et représentant du mouvement réaliste.
