Around the middle of the eighteenth century the leading figures of the French Enlightenment engaged in a philosophical debate about the nature of music. This book traces the development of the ideas discussed, focusing on three different events that occurred roughly simultaneously: Rameau's formulation of the principle of the fundamental bass; the writing of the Encyclop'edie, edited by Diderot and d'Alembert, with articles on music by Rousseau; and the "Querelle des Bouffons," over Italian comic opera and French tragic opera. The philosophes, in the typical manner of Enlightenment thinkers, were able to move freely from the broad issues of philosophy and criticism, to the more technical questions of music theory, considering music as both art and science. Their dialogue was one of extraordinary depth and richness and dealt with some of the most fundamental issues of the French Enlightenment. Verba reconstructs the link between music theory and criticism that has been lost over time, presenting intensive passages from the debate in English translation for the first time.

Can an abstract theory of Empfindsamkeit aesthetics have any value to a musician wishing to study composition in the classical style? The eighteenth-century German theorist and pedagogue Heinrich Koch showed how this question could be answered with a resounding yes. Starting with the systematic aesthetic theory of the Swiss encyclopedist Johann Sulzer, Koch was creatively able to adapt Sulzer's conservative ideas on ethical mimesis and rhetoric to concrete problems of music analysis and composition. In this collaborative study, Thomas Christensen and Nancy Baker have translated and analysed selected writings of Sulzer and Koch respectively, bringing to life a little-known confluence of philosophical and musical thought from the German Enlightenment. Koch's appropriation of Sulzer's ideas to the service of music represents an important development in the evolution of Western musical thought.

'Music at German Courts' serves to illustrate the extraordinary diversity of eighteenth-century German court music establishments without losing sight of what these 'Kapellen' had in common. What emerges from the wealth of primary source material examined in this volume is an in-depth picture of music-making within the daily life of individual courts, featuring a cast of music directors, instrumentalists, and vocalists, together with numerous support staff drawn from across Europe. 'Music at German Courts' serves to illustrate the extraordinary diversity of eighteenth-century German court music establishments without losing sight of what these 'Kapellen' had in common. What was musical life at German courts really like during the first six decades of the eighteenth century? Were musical ensembles as diverse as the Holy Roman Empire's kaleidoscopic political landscape? Through a series of individual case studies contributed by leading scholars from Germany, Poland, the United States, Canada, and Australia, this book investigates the realities of musical life at fifteen German courts of varied size (ranging from kingdoms to principalities), religious denomination, and geographical location. Significant shifts that occurred in the artistic priorities of each court are presented through a series of 'snapshots' - in effect 'core sample' years - which highlight both individual and shared patterns of development and decline. What emerges from the wealth of primary source material examined in this volume is an in-depth picture of music-making within the daily life of individual courts, featuring a cast of music directors, instrumentalists, and vocalists, together with numerous support staff drawn from across Europe.
