L'histoire des religions antéislamiques du monde iranien, en particulier celle du zoroastrisme, s'est longtemps élaborée presque exclusivement avec les matériaux issus de la partie occidentale du domaine : le plateau iranien, assise des empires achéménides, parthe et sassanide. Mais à présent des régions de l'Asie centrale, extérieure le plus souvent à ces dominations politiques, que sort la masse de l'information archéologique. Ces rapports, publiés pour la plupart en russe et en chinois, n'atteignent la communauté des chercheurs qu'avec retard, et sous une forme réduite qui ne permet pas la discussion critique des conclusions du fouilleur. Le but du présent recueil est d'aider à remédier à ce déséquilibre, en livrant sur les principales questions - cultes du feu, pratiques funéraires, iconographie religieuse - un choix de matériaux directement issus du travail de terrain de ces dernières années.
