Entre fascination des peintres pour les potentialités expressives de la photographie et emprunts des photographes aux codes de la peinture, l'exposition révèle la richesse de leurs correspondances. Depuis ses débuts au XIXe siècle, la photographie a entretenu un rapport à la fois riche et ambigu avec la peinture. Leurs histoires respectives deviennent alors inextricables et présentent d'innombrables points communs. Ces interactions sont au cœur de l'exposition Autour du symbolisme conçue à l'occasion de l'exposition Fernand Khnopff des Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. Cet artiste, en effet, substitue à l'occasion son carnet de croquis à un appareil photographique tout comme l'on fait aussi Franz von Stuck et Henri Evenepoel. Gustave Courbet, Gustave Moreau ou encore Eugène Delacroix, de leur côté, " s'inspirent " des photographies que réalisent parfois pour eux Julien Vallou de Villeneuve, Henri Rupp et Eugène Durieu. L'exposition permettra ainsi au public de découvrir pour la première fois les plus belles images de l'un des deux albums ayant appartenu à Delacroix. L'École de Barbizon vit d'autres relations entre peintres et photographes. Camille Corot ou Théodore Rousseau pour les uns, Eugène Cuvelier, Charles Famin ou Paul Berthier pour les autres, parcouraient les mêmes sentiers de la forêt de Fontainebleau, plantant qui leur chevalet, qui leur trépied devant les mêmes motifs. Autour du Symbolisme décline les liens entre photographie et peinture à travers des portraits photographiques, des études d'après nature, des mises en scène et des tableaux vivants, mais aussi à travers le pictorialisme, mouvement très marqué par le symbolisme. Rassemblant des œuvres de premier plan, l'exposition propose ainsi de porter un regard singulier et fondamental sur cette période où les artistes ne découvraient rien de moins qu'une nouvelle manière de capter le réel ! Jean Schaack (1895-1959) a pris très tôt la décision de vivre pour sa passion : la peinture. Travailleur assidu, il a participé à de nombreuses expositions de son vivant pour nous laisser un patrimoine national considérable. De nos jours, suite aux généreux dons de la famille de l'artiste, le Musée national d'histoire et d'art dispose d'un ensemble cohérent, représentatif de son oeuvre, à travers lequel l'évolution du peintre peut être suivie. L'exposition Jean Schaack représente une étape importante dans la volonté du musée de dévoiler progressivement ses fonds grâce aux expositions temporaires, accompagnée par la publication d'un catalogue reprenant l'inventaire complet des oeuvres dans les collections du MNHA.

Through the 1880s the very essence of representation, meaning and process in Western art were profoundly interrogated. Plausible representations of the external world were cast aside in favour of non-naturalism expressed in varying degrees, from modest distortions of reality to pure abstraction. The decades that followed, up to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, were a complex, vibrant period of artistic questioning, searching, risk-taking and innovation. Concentrating on this period of great upheaval, this book will explore the constructive dialogue between painting and sculpture, and the influential roles played by three giants of the era, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, across European art as a whole. While acknowledging the centrality of Paris as a cultural capital, it will also uniquely highlight other centres of artistic ferment in Europe, from Brussels and Barcelona to Berlin and Vienna, and track the variety of routes into modernism in the early twentieth century. This fully illustrated catalogue will contain four essays, introductions to each city of ferment and biographies of the artists. Exhibition: The National Gallery, London, UK (25.03. - 13.08.2023).

Recent research on the collections treasured by artists during their lifetime, or those collections they had access to, has contributed significantly to the understanding of their own compositions. Traditional historiography has favoured the study of the royal and aristocratic collections that could have inspired artists rather than of the artists’ own collections. Only those of the ‘great’ artists, such as Rubens, Bernini, Velázquez or Mengs, have been comprehensively examined. In the eighteenth century, the notion of collecting itself was transformed. An aesthetic taste was fostered and developed through the gathering of objects, and the personal collection of an artist could therefore provide the key to a more thorough understanding of their production. The nineteenth century witnessed artists bequeathing their collections to different institutions, sometimes even creating their own institutional collection. Architects, painters, sculptors and goldsmiths assembled some of the most important artistic collections of their time in their workshops.
