La très ancienne divinité Sokar est souvent évoquée pour sa fonction funéraire. Cependant, son implantation dans la capitale Thèbes au Nouvel Empire se traduit par une profonde adaptation de sa liturgie solennelle originelle. Celle-ci subit l’influence de l’idéologie royale. Dans cette perspective, un nouveau rôle est attribué à Sokar: principe divin agissant sous la forme d’un faucon hiéracocéphale ou de la barque-henou, Sokar est l’outil théologique forgé à l’Ancien Empire autour de Memphis et d’Héliopolis, permettant d’entretenir les forces créatrices des dieux ancêtres, avant de devenir au Nouvel Empire l’accessoire divin indispensable à la restauration d’un dieu solaire.
