A Tender Voyage is the first full-length study of the history of childhood and children's lives in late imperial China. The author draws on an extraordinary range of sources to analyze both the normative concept of childhood & literary and philosophical & and the treatment and experience of children in China. The study begins with the history of pediatrics and newborn care and their evolution over time. The author moves on to the social environment of the child, including models of upbringing and expected behavior and the treatment of different kinds of children, including the rebellious and the & gentle & child. She examines the role of the mother, notably her close and complex relations with her sons, and the broader emotional world of children, their relationships with the adults around them, and the destructive power of death. The last section discusses concepts of childhood in China and the West. Throughout, the study keeps in view the issue of representation versus practice, the role of memory, and the importance of listening for what is not said.

Aimer un enfant est-il un acte naturel ou culturel ? A-t-on toujours porté un intérêt affectif à l'enfant ? Peut-on véritablement penser qu'une histoire du sentiment puisse être écrite ? En se détachant de l'actualité immédiate et de ses poncifs, une réflexion philosophique touchant à l'histoire de l'enfant peut être tentée afin de resituer les questions les plus fondamentales du temps présent. L'auteur, pédiatre auprès d'adolescents marginaux, docteur en philosophie et en théologie, s'est donné comme projet de répondre à ces interrogations en scrutant les trois civilisations qui ont construit notre manière de penser l'enfant. Autant de coutumes, de rites, de mythes, de raisonnements que la présente génération récapitule dans la vision qu'elle a de l'enfant, prélude à un statut que l'enfant aura demain. Il est impossible de répondre à toutes les questions touchant l'enfant. Je crois fermement que la maîtrise de la langue est un facteur essentiel d'équilibre moral et intellectuel. Je crois également que la connaissance de la Grèce ancienne avec d'une part ses tendances à l'universalité et d'autre part sa simplicité qui la caractérise fait beaucoup pour la formation de l'esprit en général et dans tous les jugements, quelles que soient l'époque et la circonstance.
