This book is an oral history-based study of the politics of history in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Using life history and thematic interviews, the author brings the narratives of officials, survivors, returnees, perpetrators, and others whose lives have been intimately affected by genocide into conversation with scholarly studies of the Rwandan genocide, and Rwandan history more generally. In doing so, she explores the following questions: How do Rwandans use history to make sense of their experiences of genocide and related mass atrocities? And to what end? In the aftermath of such violence, how do people’s interpretations of the varied forms of suffering they endured then influence their ability to envision and support a peaceful future for their nation that includes multi-ethnic cooperation?

Secessionism perseveres as a complex political phenomenon in Africa, yet often a more in-depth analysis is overshadowed by the aspirational simplicity of pursuing a new state. Using historical and contemporary approaches, this edited volume offers the most exhaustive collection of empirical studies of African secessionism to date. The respected expert contributors put salient and lesser known cases into comparative perspective, covering Biafra, Katanga, Eritrea and South Sudan alongside Barotseland, Cabinda, and the Comoros, among others. Historisch vormen de Koerden de grootste bevolkingsgroep ter wereld zonder eigen land. Ze wonen verspreid over verschillende landen in het Midden-Oosten, hebben een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen autonome staat. Hun streven naar een onafhankelijk Koerdistan wordt door diverse landen in deze regio als een bedreiging ervaren. Dit boek schetst een overzicht van de moeizame betrekkingen tussen Turken en Koerden en geeft een analyse van de huidige situatie. Op basis daarvan verkent het de mogelijkheden voor de Koerden om hun rechten als nationale minderheid te realiseren binnen Turkije. Daarbij komt het grensoverschrijdende, internationale karakter van de relaties ter sprake en worden die relaties en hun ontwikkelingen binnen het brede perspectief van islam, nationalisme en moderniteit gepresenteerd. De worstelingen en tegenstellingen in die moderniseringsgolf, die sinds de negentiende eeuw over het Midden-Oosten raast, bepalen ook de Europese verhoudingen tot Turken en Koerden.

The work identifies conditions that allow the re-composition of a class of housing dispossessed and, consequently, the features of its action in urban spaces. The book offers fresh analytical perspectives to understanding contemporary urban transformation via new spatial and strategic approaches. In striking detail, Carlotta Caciagli shows how space is a crucial variable in shaping the strategies that allow for the politicisation of a movement's social base. She illustrates how new spatial configurations of urban space result from unique struggles of the recomposed collective subject. Most notably, three main conceptual tools are introduced to disentangle the relationship between the recomposed precarious class and space: "the spatial opportunity structure", "configurations of strategies" and "educational sites of resistance". Carlotta Caciagli is a Research Fellow in sociology at the department of Urban Studies, Polytechnic of Milan (Italy). She holds a Ph.D. in Political Sciences from the Scuola Normale Superiore, in Florence. Her research interests include social movements, urban transformations, and socio-spatial inequalities. Her research has been published in international journals, such as Antipode, Critical Sociology and others.
