A form of political writing often called advice literature shared by Christian and Muslim lands, during the Middle Ages, mirrors for princes attempted to elevate statecraft (*dawla*) to the same level as faith/religion (*din*). These guides for future rulers – Machiavelli’s The Prince being a widely-known if later example – addressed the delicate balance between seclusion and society, spirit and state, echoes of which we continue to find in the US, Europe and the Middle East several centuries later. Today, we suffer from the very opposite dilemma: there's no shortage of political commentary but a notable lack of intelligent, eloquent discourse on the role of faith and the immaterial as a valuable agent in society or public life. *Mirrors for Princes* brings together the writing of pre-eminent scholars and essayists using the genre of medieval advice literature as a starting point from which to discuss fate, fortune and governance, difference as generosity, mammary politics, grooming and voicover translations. The illustrated essays are accompanied by an interview with Slavs and Tatars.

This monograph features a new body of work, which artist Ida Ekblad realized for a solo exhibition at De Vleeshal in Middelburg, The Netherlands (November-December 2013). Fundamental in Ekblad's work is an interest in the historical perspective as a central element of our time. Through combining historical perspective in a contemporary cultural and social element, Ekblad gives an answer to the superficial connotation of a contemporary society based on speed and consumption. The use of discarded material to realize assemblages is a translation of the recuperation of the element of history to embrace a more complex relationship between art and time.

The documenta 14 guide will take the form of a daybook, emphasizing the 163 calendar days of the exhibitions in Athens and Kassel - a first-time extension of the usual 100-day project of past documenta - and the personal and subjective nature of the spectator's relationship to them. Each documenta 14 artist will be granted a day in this daybook, which will be accompanied by a newly commissioned text on that artist's practice, as well as an image of artwork commissioned by the artist specifically for the publication. The critical texts will be authored by a wide variety of practitioners - critics, curators, novelists, historians, and poets - and the images will be singular and created by the artists especially for the daybook itself.
