Abstract

E. Bruce Goldstein's SENSATION AND PERCEPTION has helped a myriad of students understand perceptual research and how the results of this research relate to everyday experience. A key strength of this text has always been its ability to illustrate concepts through examples and visuals. Dr. Goldstein and new co-author Dr. James Brockmole take students on an intriguing journey through the senses with both clarity and thoroughness, combining their extensive classroom experience and the most innovative research to create a visual, colorful text. MindTap, the digital learning solution available with the text, features an updated Exploration feature that enhances students grasp of concepts by enabling them to view experimental stimuli, perceptual demonstrations, and short film clips about the research being discussed.

Abstract

This book presents a new approach to understanding the history and practice of cognitive-behavior therapy by presenting profiles of 38 countries located around the world. The objectives of this edited volume are to provide a broad understanding of the practice of CBT internationally as well as country specific practices that will provide researchers and practitioners with important information for consideration in the application of CBT. The book begins with an introductory chapter by the editors that discusses the history of CBT and the efforts to globalize and disseminate the science and practice of CBT as well as the unique cultural and international variables. The subsequent chapters offer detailed country profiles of the history and practice of CBT from around the globe. More specifically, chapters will provide an overview of the country, a history of psychotherapy in the country, current regulations regarding psychotherapy provision, professional and cognitive behavior therapy organizations, training opportunities/programs in CBT, populations most frequently worked with using CBT in the country, the use and adaptation of CBT, the research on CBT in the country, and CBT with special populations (children, immigrants, HIV+, etc). Many of the nations represented are the most populous and influential ones in their respective regions where CBT has been incorporated into psychotherapy training and practice. Taken as a whole, the countries are quite diverse in terms of sociocultural, economic, and political conditions and the impact of these variables on the practice of CBT in the country will be discussed. The final chapter of the volume offers a summary of the patterns of practice, integrating the main findings and challenges and discussing them within a global context. A discussion of the vision for next steps in the globalization of CBT concludes the book.

Abstract

This SpringerBrief provides an interdisciplinary synthesis based on psychology, logic, mathematics, cognitive science, and the history of science. It presents psychology as a science that suffers from a reduced understanding of the most fundamental logic in our practical-bodily encounters with the world, including with our fellow human beings. The Brief offers a new “dual” logic that is based on the duality between identification and description of objects, including persons. The Brief ties in modern mathematics as a tool that can be used to catch this duality in a precise manner.  Featured topics in this Brief include:  The emergence of Mechanism. The duality in animal and human subject-object relations. Psychology’s compatibility with natural sciences. Four cornerstones of modern mathematics. The Extensional Method.  A New Logical Foundation for Psychology will be of interest to psychologist, philosophers, and mathematicians concerned with basic theoretical and methodological problems. .

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive overview of cognitive enhancement, the use of different substances and actions (e.g., meditation, video game, smart drugs, food supplements, nutrition, brain stimulation, neurofeedback, physical exercise, music, or cognitive training) to enhance human perception, attention, memory, cognitive control, and action in healthy individuals. Chapters contain research on enhancing procedures and activities that will help to further develop enhancement based on individual needs and interests. Chapters also discuss the underlying mechanism of how these means influence and change behaviors and moods. In addition, the book also provides “real-life” examples in which the several means of cognitive enhancement has been successfully applied.  It concludes with a call to develop more specific, mechanistic theories to guide cognitive enhancing programs as well as the editor’s own tailored-approach proposal for enhancing cognition for individuals.  Featured topics include:  The effect of caffeine on cognitive abilities.  Aerobic exercise and its short-term and long-term effects on cognition.  The effect, if any, of Ritalin and Modafinil on promoting cognitive enhancement.  Temperature variations and its influences on behavior.  The effect of food supplements across the life-span.  Theory-Driven Approaches to Cognitive Enhancement is a must-have resource for psychologists, physicians, sport and exercise scientists, medical scientists, and teachers. “This book provides a state-of-the-art overview of different aspects of cognitive enhancement. The chapters are very focused, well-structured, in-depth, and rounded up by excellent illustrations. I can highly recommend the book to readers interested in the matter.” Dr. Julia Karbach, Goethe-University  “Overall, I think it is a highly original book on a timely topic, with a fresh approach and rich in practical and societal implications. The book is written in a very clear way and it is a pleasure to read.”  Dr. Anna M. Borghi, Sapienza University of Rome.

Abstract

This eminently useful guide presents an up-to-date framework for Rational-Emotive Cognitive-Behavioral Coaching (RE-CBC), from basic concepts, techniques, and applications to evidence of how and why this versatile method works. It details how RE-CBC synthesizes the rational thinking, cognitive disputing, and semantic training traditions of RE and CB therapies into coaching strategies for solving problems or furthering personal development. The book’s sections on process and techniques demonstrate the flexibility of the method as used in a variety of settings toward a gamut of purposes, illustrating Albert Ellis’ central goal of long-term happiness through rational living. And specialized chapters offer applications of RE-CBC to familiar coaching domains (life, health, family, motivation) as well as to the complex worlds of business and organizations. Included in the coverage: · Coaching for rational living: rational-emotive, cognitive-behavioral perspectives. · Psychological blockers to successful coaching outcomes. · Enhancing positive psychology coaching practice. · Assessment, case formulation, and intervention models. · A step-based framework for coaching practice. · Plus: applications of Rational-Emotive Cognitive-Behavioral Coaching, including motivational, parent/family, workplace stress management, organizational change, school success, and sports performance. Coaching for Rational Living is a robust practice-building resource for coaches, psychologists, counselors, and health professionals, particularly mental health practitioners who use rational-emotive and cognitive-behavioral therapy and coaching. .
