This book builds on the current trends in informal caregivers’ role in the supportive care of cancer patients (as well as other diseases) across the care continuum covering topics from the healthcare professionals and the users’ perspectives. Informal caregivers are a critical resource to their care recipients and an essential component of the health care system. The book introduces a comprehensive view of the topic and acknowledges the importance and the complexity of caregiving. Here lays one of the uniqueness of this book, which highlights the areas and the ways that for example interventions in specific settings/groups of patients can actually facilitate the caregiving process. The increasing number of care-dependent people, the adoption of the principle “outpatient before inpatient”, the shift of care from inpatient to outpatient and the preference for home care (i.e. majority) are only some of the reasons that contributed to Informal caregiving becoming a central feature of the health care landscape and will become even more prominent in the decades ahead. The book draws on the experts’ high-end, current systematic research evidence and real-life examples on these topics to provide an insightful perspective on undertaking research within this context, and to demonstrate informal caregivers’ impact on patients’ outcomes. The structure of the book provides multiple perspectives to the topic and makes it appealing to a wide range of recipients including the nursing community, clinicians, social workers, researchers, policy makers, technology experts as well as postgraduate students especially to those practicing specifically in supportive care in cancer. The book fills a gap in this field of expertise not only by familiarizing the reader with a wide range of topics to be considered but it also emphasizes on what the developments in the field in the future would need to take into consideration. Finally, current and future studies can be informed from the practices of preceding studies that are incorporated in the book. .

This book presents a complete guide for psychotherapists to apply a protocol based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to the treatment of insomnia. It describes an evidence-based treatment program for insomnia based on the theoretical model of ACT which allows clinicians to both apply it as monotherapy or in conjunction with behavioral components that are associated with better insomnia treatment outcomes, such as stimulus control and sleep restriction. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the current psychotherapy of choice to treat insomnia, but there are patients who have difficulties in adhering to some therapeutic elements and others who are refractory to this modality. Therefore, new therapeutic modalities are needed. ACT applied to insomnia has shown effective results, presenting another way to deal with the cognitive components involved in sleep difficulties. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Insomnia: A Session-By-Session Guide aims to bridge the gap between the available evidence on the use of ACT for insomnia and clinical practice by providing, in one single volume, all the necessary tools for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and mental health professionals interested in applying this innovative evidence-based approach to the treatment of insomnia. “This innovative and well-written volume offers therapists a practical, evidence-based alternative to traditional Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or medication-dependent treatments for insomnia. It’s important to have such choices, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has unusual strengths in focusing on the whole person and their overall quality of life, instead of the features of sleep disruption alone. Using a carefully crafted, session-by-session approach, it equips professionals with the tools to adapt ACT to individual patient needs, making a meaningful difference in their journey towards restfulsleep and greater well-being. Highly recommended”. Steven C. Hayes, Ph.D. Foundation Professor of Psychology Emeritus, University of Nevada, Reno. Originator of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

This is the first book to look exclusively from at the use of MHapps from an applied psychosocial perspective. Much of the academic literature on MHapps in psychology focuses on the clinical efficacy of using apps (e.g., depression reduction as result of using a certain app) and will typically report on the use of randomised controlled trials (or a similar method) to illustrate the use of apps as a tool for improving a psychological condition. Therefore, the main benefit of this book is that it recognises the impact of apps from a social perspective and will aim to show how everyday forms of distress are embedded in the use of these apps and the broader set of relations that constitute people’s everyday lives. The content of this book will identify how an applied social perspective can offer insight into the power of apps to shape our sense of ourselves and of others. This book will be of use to educators and students in psychology, sociology, health studies, media studies and cultural studies. Lewis Goodings is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK. He is interested in the intersections between digital technologies and mental health. His work is dedicated to an applied version of social psychology that focuses on the role of space and place, with an overriding interest on the affective aspects of interaction. Darren Ellis is a Senior Lecturer of Psychology at the University of the West of England in Bristol, UK. He is interested in emotion and affect studies, everyday experiences of surveillance, social media, and emotional disclosure. He is a social psychologist and practicing psychotherapist. Ian Tucker is a Professor of Health and Social Psychology at the University of East London (UEL) in London, UK. He focuses on mental health, emotion, and affect with a specific focus on how they are shaped through interactions with digital technologies. He has published widely in these areas, including Emotion in the Digital Age (Routledge, 2020).

This book is a primer on Stepped Care 2.0. It is the first book in a series of three. This primer addresses the increased demand for mental health care by supporting stakeholders (help-seekers, providers, and policy-makers) to collaborate in enhancing care outcomes through work that is both more meaningful and sustainable. Our current mental health system is organized to offer highly intensive psychiatric and psychological care. While undoubtedly effective, demand far exceeds the supply for such specialized programming. Many people seeking to improve their mental health do not need psychiatric medication or sophisticated psychotherapy. A typical help seeker needs basic support. For knee pain, a nurse or physician might first recommend icing and resting the knee, working to achieve a healthy weight, and introducing low impact exercise before considering specialist care. Unfortunately, there is no parallel continuum of care for mental health and wellness. As a result, a person seeking the most basic support must line up and wait for the specialist along with those who may have very severe and/or complex needs. Why are there no lower intensity options? One reason is fear and stigma. A thorough assessment by a specialist is considered best practice. After all, what if we miss signs of suicide or potential harm to others? A reasonable question on the surface; however, the premise is flawed. First, the risk of suicide, or threat to others, for those already seeking care, is low. Second, our technical capacity to predict on these threats is virtually nil. Finally, assessment in our current culture of fear tends to focus more on the identification of deficits (as opposed to functional capacities), leading to over-prescription of expensive remedies and lost opportunities for autonomy and self-management. Despite little evidence linking assessment to treatment outcomes, and no evidence supporting our capacity to detect risk for harm, we persist with lengthy intake assessments and automatic specialist referrals that delay care. Before providers and policy makers can feel comfortable letting go of risk assessment, however, they need to understand the forces underlying the risk paradigm that dominates our society and restricts creative solutions for supporting those in need. SC2.0 reimagines the original UK stepped care model by integrating a range of traditional and emerging online mental health programs systematically within the context of recovery principles and practice. SC2.0 prevents problems from escalating into serious conditions by systematizing shared responsibility for accessing care options at the right time, with the right people, in the right context. Program matching decisions in SC2.0 are also more flexible and client-centric: Rather than stepping only according to diagnosis or symptom severity, one or more options of varying intensity can be jointly selected based on client need, preference, functioning, and readiness for engaging in healing work. .
